On the JJ Barnes Blog, in case one day I can afford to go on holiday, I check out research that found Oran ranked top among the ten cheapest cities in the Mediterranean to visit for a holiday.

A holiday would be lovely. We are stressed, tired, and definitely overworked, but in this cost of living crisis, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to justify or afford spending money on a getaway, especially if you want to catch some sun.

While taking a holiday is technically well outside my financial capabilities right now, I do like the idea that maybe, with a bit more time and effort, a holiday could be on the cards… but where? It would need to be not too far away… not too expensive… but still somewhere with sunshine and fabulous food.

To help me work out this out, Gambling ‘N Go‘s financial experts looked at how much it would cost for two people to eat at a mid-range restaurant, book hotels, and take flights from any London airport in each major Mediterranean city. To determine the ranking, each city received a score out of 100 based on the cost of each factor.

Ten Cheapest Cities In The Mediterranean

Oran

With a final score of 94.9, Oran takes first place on the list of the cheapest Mediterranean cities for a getaway to the coast.

Oran on the JJ Barnes Blog
Oran

The city is known as the music and party capital of Algeria, and with a beer costing an average of £1.04, you can enjoy the lively nightlife without breaking the bank. In addition, the average price of a return flight to Oran is £87. Therefore, you can travel there by plane at a low cost and visit some of the stunning beaches that surround the city, such as Les Andaluz beach.

Port Said

Egypt’s Port Said comes in second place with a final score of 90.3. The city is renowned for its fish, so it’s an incredible city to visit for the individuals who partake in the kinds of the ocean – particularly with it being the least expensive city for eating out with a café for two costing only £10.80 by and large.

Algiers

Algiers, with a score of 88, is also in third place on the podium. The capital of Algeria has a number of museums, including the Antiquities and Islamic Art, where you can learn about the country’s culture. You won’t have to spend a lot of money to get around the city to see what it has to offer because an average taxi fare is just 30p per km.

Tunis

With a score of 87, Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, is ranked fourth. The Medina of Tunis, the oldest part of the city with stunning architecture and markets for souvenirs, is one of the city’s many attractions. It is also the cheapest city for hotels, so you can stay here for an average of £333 for seven nights.

Tangier

Fifth on the rundown is Tangier in Morocco, taking a score of 82.5. Eat traditional Moroccan dishes like maakouda, a fried mashed potato dumpling that is a popular street food, to soak up the culture and the city’s cheapest factors. Hotels and restaurants for two were the city’s cheapest factors. Go through the day under the daylight at Tangier ocean side, and even polish off the three day weekend by the promenade where you will find a lot of bars.

Alexandria

Alexandria, the capital of Egypt, comes in sixth place with a score of 82.3. The Citadel of Qaitbay and the stunning Montazah Gardens are just two of Alexandria’s many attractions. The low cost of taxis—only 13 cents per kilometer traveled—will be helpful for exploring.

Izmir

Izmir, a city in western Turkey, ranks seventh with an 81.9 score. You can either take a ferry to the eastern part of Konak Square for breathtaking views of Izmir or visit Konak Square in the center of the city, where you’ll find nearby cafes, shops, and restaurants.

Mersin

With an overall score of 81.8, Mersin, which is also located in Turkey, comes in close behind in eighth place. The average cost of a two-course meal at a restaurant in the city is just £15.50. Try Mersin’s specialty Tantuni, a spicy street food dish of spicy beef with tomatoes, onion, and parsley wrapped in thin bread, for an authentic Turkish experience.

Antalya

Following up in the 10th spot is Antalya, one of Turkey’s best ocean side objections, with a score of 79.6. One of the city’s most appealing beaches is Lara Beach, which is known for its crystal-clear water and exceptional cleanliness. However, there are also a lot of restaurants and bars there, each with a lively or laid-back atmosphere to choose from.

Istanbul

Istanbul, the fourth Turkish city in the top 10, earns the final spot on the list with a score of 77.7. Visit landmarks like the Topkapi Palace, which was built in the 15th century, to take in the city’s past. On the other hand, go through a loosening up day at Florya ocean side where you can appreciate seafront eating.

Mediterranean Holidays

In response to the findings, a Gambling ‘N Go spokesperson stated that while it is always exciting to plan your next trip abroad, it can be challenging to locate a location that provides a variety of activities on a budget. Fortunately, these top ten cities offer both the city center and proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, giving them the best of both worlds. So, whether you want to eat out on the beach, relax with a beer, or learn about the culture, you won’t have to break the bank in any of these cities.
