On the JJ Barnes Blog, as the Christmas break presents an ideal opportunity to work on my home, I check out top tips for how to save money on Xmas home renovations!

Xmas home renovations are no different than any other. But it is a time when you can say yes and treat yourself. Not everyone wants presents, and there’s nothing better than the gift of a nice home. So, from setting a budget to planning purchases, here’s how to save some money.

Shop Around Online

Pretty much everyone knows that you need to shop around to get better deals. But at Xmas it is something of a chore as every store tries their best to get your attention. However, there is a solution. From the comfort of your own home, hot chocolate in hand, you can do your Xmas renovation shopping online! From lighting to appliances, electrical wholesale stores usually offer great discounts over the holiday period. So get comfy and get prepared for a long haul!

Stick to a Budget for Xmas Home Renovations

Spending money is a big part of Xmas these days. When it comes to Xmas, about 86% of Millennials spend more than they should. A budget can help you stay on track with money:

● Assess what money is available and set a realistic budget you think you need.
● Pad out the budget by 10% to 20% to make up for mistakes and increased costs.
● Plan what you want or need, never make an impulse buy and hold yourself accountable.

Just knowing what you have available will help you make better decisions. But it also helps to make sure you have some extra for unforeseen incidents, and you must say no to some things!

Spruce Up Existing Materials

Sometimes, it is better to work with what you have than to start over. This is a great way to save money and stay sustainable. For example, a kitchen makeover may not necessarily need a complete renovation. If you are hosting dinner this Xmas, sprucing up the kitchen cupboards with some paint is better than ripping them out. It is faster and cheaper, and it saves money when buying the shiny new range oven you always wanted! You can even put a bow on it!

Xmas Home Renovations by Upcycling

Further to sprucing up what you have, upcycling is a popular way to save money when renovating these days. It’s all about using what’s available and keeping anything that can be useful. However, budget interior design requires a keen eye and some foresight:

● When ripping out the bathroom or kitchen, keep pipes for shelving units or hooks.
● Set aside any wood you come across to be cleaned up and used for a spa bathroom.
● Retain bricks as they can be used for artwork, splashbacks and outdoor paving.
● Keep older lightbulbs as they can contribute to specific interior styles as decor.
● You can use boxes, cable reels and miscellaneous materials for coffee tables.

With a creative eye, anything is reusable. Pipes are versatile because of the materials they are made from. From hanging shelves to feet for chairs, your imagination is pretty much the limit.

Buy in Bulk If It Works Out Cheaper

This isn’t always the best option, but it can save money in the long run. Buying in bulk means you can save cash on essential items such as tools, paint and materials. Of course, you may end up buying more than you need for a room renovation.

However, you will save money by bulk buying if you plan on more than one room or plan a renovation later on in the year. Combined with targeted sales, there is a lot of potential to save a decent amount of cash.

Targeted Xmas Home Renovations

Experts predict that UK retail will see an extra £28 billion during November and January, probably because of the sales. However, a plan is always better than buying blind:

● Check each store for sales dates and plan to get up early to buy what you need.
● Hold off on big purchases until after Xmas as they often reduce even further.
● Don’t wait until Boxing Day, as Boxing Day sales usually begin a few days before Xmas.

Most stores will stagger sales, so stay vigilant by checking out websites for official information. Also, be aware that sales often start pretty early on and go on until well into February.

Do What You Can Yourself

A lot of the main costs of renovating come from paying others to do the work. Sure, there’s nothing quite like an expert finish. But with Xmas and your home makeover, money is likely to be a factor. So, how can you get around this? Interior designers recommend doing what you can yourself. Even if it is something small like painting a room, that’s a lot of money saved. However, always hire experts for the jobs you aren’t good at, will turn out bad or require qualifications.

Summary

Shopping around online is easier than walking the stores and will help you get the best deals for Xmas home renovations. You can also use existing materials to spruce what you have. And you can save a lot of money by getting stuck in with some DIY jobs such as painting the walls.
