On the JJ Barnes Blog, discover how six essential lawn care tools, from lawnmowers to hose pipes, can transform your yard maintenance into a breeze—read on to find out which ones are worth the investment!
Looking after a lawn can be a lot easier if you have the right tools. From grass trimmers to dethatchers, there are various pieces of equipment you can buy to help with lawn care. This post explores 6 tools worth investing in.
Lawnmower

Perhaps the most important lawn maintenance tool of them all is the lawnmower. There are quite a few different types of mower on the market that you can buy. These include:
- Manual push mowers: These traditional mowers are cheap and silent and require minimal maintenance, but using them can be a workout.
- Petrol/diesel push mowers: Turned on using a pull cord, these mowers are very powerful and have great range, but are noisy and can be more costly to maintain.
- Electric push mowers: Electric mowers aren’t quite as powerful as petrol mowers, but are relatively quiet and affordable to run – the majority are cordless and have a battery that is charged up after each use.
- Petrol/diesel ride-on mowers: These mowers require you to sit on them. They take the sweat out of mowing and are excellent for large gardens.
- Electric ride-on mowers: These are similar to petrol/diesel ride-on mowers, but are quieter and cost less to run due to being battery-powered.
- Robotic mowers: Did you know that you can buy fully-automated mowers that can cut your grass for you? These mowers take all the effort out of mowing and are battery powered, making them quite cheap to run. However, they can cost quite a bit to buy.
When choosing a mower, there are features that could be worth considering. For example, some mowers have a basket for collecting grass clippings, while others throw clippings back onto the lawn. Some also allow you to alter the blade height for different grass lengths, while others have a fixed height.
Grass trimmer
A grass trimmer – also known as a string trimmer, a strimmer or a weed whacker – is a garden tool that uses a spinning nylon line to cut grass. These tools are excellent for tidying up the edges of lawns where lawnmowers typically cannot reach. They can also be useful for trimming around lawn obstacles like sheds, benches, sundials and paths. Most modern grass trimmers are electric and cordless. That said you can still buy petrol grass trimmers and plug-in electric trimmers.
Lawn rake
Lawn rakes can be useful for getting rid of leaves and debris from your lawn. These are typically metal rakes with long handles and wide-splayed tines. You can buy rakes with wooden or plastic handles. It’s worthwhile investing in a good quality rake that won’t easily get damaged.
Aerator
A lawn aerator is a device used to create holes in your lawn. What is the purpose of this? Aeration can help air and water to penetrate deeper into compacted soil. This can help with drainage, plus it can help more water and oxygen reach the roots of your grass for better growth. Aerators come in a variety forms including manual aerators that you stab into the ground, manual rolling aerators that you can roll over the ground and electric aerators that spin by themselves.
Dethatcher
Also known as a lawn scarifier, a dethatcher is a tool that can be used to scrape dead and decaying grass from your lawn. It is different to a rake, because it helps tackle thicker layers of grass and debris (known as thatch) that can accumulate on your lawn. This can help your lawn to stay looking lush and healthy. You can use a manual dethatcher or buy an electric dethatcher (these are a lot easier to use, but cost more).
Hose pipe
Watering your lawn is an important task that can be overlooked. While you can use a watering can to do this, it’s much more efficient to use a hose pipe. When buying a garden hose, it’s often worth splashing out on a high quality option that won’t get damaged easily or kink. Many hose pipes come with reels, allowing you to wind them and store them away neatly after use. Some also come with an array of nozzles for different spray settings. This can be useful for different watering tasks (the mist setting is good for new grass and fine grasses, the cone setting is good for average lawns and the jet setting can be used to kill weeds). Hose pipes can also be attached to automatic sprinklers, which may be possible to put on a timer each day, preventing you from having to go out and water your lawn manually.
