How To Wear Tennis Inspired Fashion

On the JJ Barnes Blog, as tenniscore explodes in the google search trends, I check out how to wear tennis inspired fashion this summer!

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

Sports and athleisure often inspire fashion trends, and summer 2024 is putting centre-court chic in the limelight. Worldwide searches for ‘tenniscore’ exploded by 345% according to Google Trends, and online interest in ‘tennis outfits’ has also risen by 228% throughout Great Britain and Ireland in the last year, according to Pinterest Trends, as well as 80% for ‘sporty outfits’.

The tenniscore trend was likely inspired by the release of The Challengers (2024), which made $15 million on its opening weekend and had a legendary press tour with fashion icon Zendaya, who wore tennis-themed dresses, shoes and more on the red carpet.

As someone who isn’t particularly fashion forward and mostly lives in leggings and a baggy T-shirt, I thought I ought to get some top tips on how to wear tennis inspired fashion in my day to day life. To help me out, the experts at Zizzi Fashion sent over a list of tennis-inspired fashion ideas to help us embrace tenniscore this Summer.

There’s no doubt that ‘tenniscore’ is this summer’s most in-demand fashion trend. To embrace tennis-inspired fashion this summer, remember to wear each item in whichever way feels comfortable and natural. For example, people can wear pleated skirts alongside other athleisure, although they will also style well with everyday clothing, like knitwear and this season’s trending trainers. In short, ‘tenniscore’ is individual to the person and can be moulded to fit their style, just like any fashion trend.

How To Wear Tenniscore

Pleated Skirts

Pleated skirts are the epitome of tennis-themed fashion. The iconic skirts are worn by professional tennis players every year, whether they’re slaying at the French Open or Wimbledon. This year, however, pleated skirts have left the tennis court and made their way onto the catwalk.

Lacoste’s Fall/Winter 2024 collection at Paris Fashion Week was the perfect example of ‘tenniscore’ breaking into the fashion world. The collection had multiple tennis-inspired outfits, including mini and mid-length pleated skirts in hues of green, brown and black.

It’s safe to say that pleated skirts will be out in full force this summer. There are countless ways to sport a pleated skirt, including pairing them alongside cowboy boots, graphic t-shirts or denim jackets. They’re a versatile tennis-themed trend that can be moulded to each person’s individual style.

Tennis Dresses

Tennis dresses are made for the court. Although, if this year has made one thing clear, it’s that the short and sweet ensemble also belongs on the red carpet, dominating this summer’s ‘tenniscore’ fashion trend.

Zendaya wore multiple dresses on The Challengers (2024) press tour. In Rome, the actress turned heads in a silver plunging tennis dress. The pleated bottom and striped detailing were iconic nods to this season’s trend.

Tennis dresses can also be styled casually. Pairing tennis dresses with boots, denim jackets, trainers and pull-over jumpers can create an effortless, casual look for summer.

Polo Shirts

Polo shirts are an iconic, versatile piece of clothing. The collared shirts have made waves in multiple fashion trends throughout history, from 90s mod-style polo shirts to this year’s preppy trend revival – and they’re back for ‘tenniscore’ 2024.

Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection featured numerous polo shirts. The brand’s models sported classic navy blue shirts and an oversized, striped shirt in brown. Both styles are unisex and can be worn by anyone with a taste for tennis-inspired clothing.

Plus, there’s no “right” way to wear a polo shirt. To channel classic court-centre chic, people can wear fitted polo shirts layered with a retro jumper tied around their shoulders, paying homage to Princess Diana’s timeless style in the 90s.

However, there are other, more casual ways to style polo shirts. Hayley Bieber, for example, looked effortlessly chic in a striped polo shirt paired with baggy denim jeans and an oversized leather jacket, as pictured in 2023. This casual take is an easy way to embrace tennis-inspired fashion this summer.

Centre-Court Colours

Last, but certainly not least, is centre-court colours. White is undoubtedly the number one colour for this year’s tennis-inspired fashion. Whether someone sports a tennis dress or a polo shirt, all-white outfits embody the elegance and class of the sport.

Although, this year’s ‘tenniscore’ fashion trend also embraces brighter, bolder colours. Zendaya wore multiple green-coloured outfits on The Challengers (2024) press tour, including a tennis ball green gown that stunned at the film’s afterparty. If that doesn’t scream ‘tenniscore’, nothing will.

Don’t stop at green, though. In addition to embracing centre-court colours, people can wear tennis-inspired fits in a range of hues. Think pink tennis skirts, brown polo shirts and more – the list goes on and on and on.

Conclusion

Remember, tenniscore is all about embracing a sporty-chic aesthetic. Don’t be afraid to experiment, mix and match different pieces, and personalize the look to reflect your own style. Whether you go for a classic pleated skirt and polo combo or a more modern take with sporty separates, have fun and embrace the playful spirit of summer fashion.

The Best Natural Sleep Remedies

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out the best natural sleep remedies and how they work in an effort to fight insomnia and get a healthier mind.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

We all know that a proper sleep routine is essential for overall health and wellbeing, yet millions of us Brits are struggling to get a good night’s rest. If, like me, you’re one of them, then this is the post for you.

If you’ve spent yet another night spent staring at the ceiling, counting sheep (or cracks in the plaster), battling insomnia and yearning for a good night’s sleep, you might be considering sleeping pills as a way to finally rest. However, there’s a treasure trove of natural sleep remedies waiting to be explored, offering a safe and effective way to lull you into dreamland, so you can finally wake up feeling refreshed.

New research by wellness experts at Brown’s CBD measured the average monthly search volume for terms related to various sleep remedies over the past 12 months, such as ‘ashwagandha sleep’ and ‘valerian root pills for sleep’, to determine the UK’s favourite natural sleep remedies. I’ll look at each one and why it works, to help you make the right choice for your bedtime.

Natural sleep remedies can be a wonderful first line of defence for those struggling with occasional sleeplessness. From calming herbs such as ashwagandha, to essential oils like lavender, there are a variety of options available that can be consumed in various ways, meaning there is often a solution that suits everyone. The key is to find what works best for you, and create a consistent routine that promotes a restful night’s sleep.

-Lawrence Brown, CEO of Brown’s CBD

The Best Natural Sleep Remedies

Magnesium

Magnesium takes the title of the UK’s most popular natural sleep remedy, with an average monthly search volume of 17,187.

Magnesium acts as a natural relaxant, helping to quiet the nervous system and ease feelings of anxiety or tension that can interfere with sleep.

Magnesium also plays a role in muscle function. By promoting relaxation in your muscles, it can contribute to a feeling of overall ease and comfort, making it easier to drift off to sleep.

It’s important to note that while magnesium may be helpful for some people with sleep issues, it’s not a guaranteed cure-all.

Melatonin

Melatonin ranks second on the list, with an average monthly search volume of 6,663. Think of melatonin as your body’s internal conductor, orchestrating your sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm) in response to light and darkness. As darkness falls, melatonin production increases, sending signals to your body that it’s time to wind down and prepare for sleep. Melatonin levels naturally peak in the middle of the night, promoting deeper, more restorative sleep.

Taking melatonin supplements at the appropriate time can help reset your internal clock and realign your sleep-wake cycle with the new light-dark environment.

Some studies suggest melatonin supplements might improve overall sleep quality, leading to deeper, more restful sleep. This can leave you feeling more energized and refreshed in the morning.

Valerian Root

Placing third on the list is valerian root, with an average monthly search volume of 3,964. This popular herbal remedy comes from the Valeriana officinalis plant, and its sleep-promoting properties have been used for centuries in traditional medicine.

Valerian root may interact with certain neurotransmitters in the brain, like GABA, which plays a role in relaxation and sleep regulation. By influencing these pathways, valerian root might promote a sense of calm and ease, making it easier to drift off to sleep.

Some studies suggest valerian root might not only help you fall asleep faster but also improve the quality of your sleep. This could mean experiencing deeper, more restorative sleep cycles, leaving you feeling more refreshed in the morning.

Lavender

Ranking fourth is lavender, which has an average monthly search volume of 1,585. Lavender oil produces a calming aroma, known to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. Our sense of smell is a powerful pathway to the brain, and lavender oil interacts with this system to promote relaxation and sleep.

Lavender oil’s calming properties might extend to reducing anxiety, a common culprit behind sleep disturbances. By promoting a sense of peace and tranquility, lavender oil can create a more sleep-conducive environment.

Some studies suggest lavender oil may not only help you fall asleep faster but also improve the quality of your sleep. This could mean experiencing deeper, more restorative sleep cycles, leaving you feeling more refreshed in the morning.

Diffusing lavender oil creates a calming atmosphere in your bedroom. The gentle scent will fill the air as you unwind before bed.

L-Theanine

L-Theanine ranks as the UK’s fifth most favourite sleep remedy, with an average monthly search volume of 1,417. This amino acid is found in green tea and has been shown to increase levels of calming neurotransmitters like GABA in the brain. GABA plays a crucial role in promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety, both of which can significantly impact sleep quality.

Green tea also contains a small amount of caffeine, but unlike the jittery feeling you might get from coffee, L-Theanine seems to work synergistically with caffeine. This means L-Theanine may counteract some of the negative sleep effects of caffeine, allowing you to experience the alertness benefit without the sleep disruption.

Incorporate your green tea into a relaxing bedtime routine. Dim the lights, curl up with a good book, and savor the calming effects of the L-Theanine.

Glycine

Placing sixth in the ranking is glycine, with an average monthly search volume of 1,033. Glycine is another amino acid that has been linked to aiding sleep. Our body temperature naturally dips slightly as we prepare for sleep. By promoting a cooler body temperature, glycine works by mimicking the body’s natural pre-sleep cooling process, promoting the production of calming neurotransmitters.

Serotonin, a neurotransmitter often associated with mood regulation, also plays a role in sleep. Studies suggest glycine may increase serotonin levels in the brain, potentially promoting feelings of calmness and relaxation, easing the transition to sleep.

Glycine acts as a mild inhibitory neurotransmitter, meaning it helps to quiet down nerve activity in the brain. This calming effect can be particularly helpful for those struggling to quiet a racing mind before bed.

Ashwaghanda

Ashwaghanda ranks as the UK’s seventh favourite natural sleep remedy, with an average monthly search volume of 925.

Chronic stress is a major sleep disruptor. Ashwagandha’s adaptogenic properties may help regulate stress hormones like cortisol, promoting a sense of calm and relaxation, making it easier to fall asleep. Ashwagandha’s potential calming effect might also extend to reducing anxiety, creating a more peaceful and sleep-conducive state of mind.

Studies suggest Ashwagandha may not only help you fall asleep faster but also improve the overall quality of your sleep. This could mean experiencing deeper, more restorative sleep cycles, leaving you feeling more energized in the morning.

Passionflower

Ranking eighth is passionflower, with an average monthly search volume of 495. Passionflower, or Passiflora incarnata, boasts a long history of use as a natural remedy for anxiety and sleep issues.

Passionflower may interact with certain neurotransmitters in the brain, like GABA, which plays a role in relaxation and sleep regulation. By influencing these pathways, Passionflower might promote a sense of calm and ease, making it easier to drift off to sleep. This could lead to not only falling asleep faster but also experiencing deeper, more restorative sleep cycles.

Anxiety is a major culprit behind sleep problems. Passionflower’s potential calming effects might extend to reducing anxiety, creating a more peaceful and sleep-conducive environment.

Chamomile

Ninth on the list is chamomile, with an average monthly search volume of 474. Traditionally consumed in a tea, chamomile’s calming properties are believed to come from the antioxidant apigenin, which may interact with brain receptors to induce sleepiness.

There’s some evidence that chamomile might interact with GABA, a neurotransmitter that promotes relaxation and sleep regulation. By influencing these pathways, chamomile tea could ease you into a gentle slumber.

Chamomile tea offers a gentle and relaxing way to promote better sleep. The combination of its calming properties and the soothing ritual of brewing a cup can create a sleep-conducive environment.

Hops

Rounding off the top 10 is hops, with an average monthly search volume of 177. More commonly known for being an essential component in the beer brewing process, the hops flower may promote better sleep through producing a calming compound called xanthohumol. Hops tea, brewed from these fragrant flowers, might be the natural sleep aid you’ve been searching for.

Hops contain compounds called alpha-acids and beta-acids, which are thought to interact with the central nervous system, promoting relaxation and sleepiness. Sipping on hops tea before bed may help quiet your mind and ease you into a calmer state.

Hops tea can be particularly effective when combined with valerian root, another natural sleep aid. Studies suggest this combination might work synergistically to improve sleep quality.

8 Habits That Can Extend Your Life

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out the top 8 habits that can extend your life and how to incorporate them into your daily routine.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

Living a long and healthy life would mean I get to be there to watch my children, and any future grandchildren, grow up. It would mean I get more time to spend time doing things I enjoy, eat food I like, and visit countries I want to explore. Accepting fate can often intervene and crash a bus into plans for longevity, I wanted to learn about habits I can introduce to my life that will give me the best chance of extending my life and sticking around for as long as possible.

I’m not interested in fad diets or grueling workout routines. I’m talking about practical, sustainable habits that can be seamlessly woven into your daily life, from the power of a good night’s sleep to the importance of social connection.

To help me out, Richard Smith-Bernal, founder of The Juice Smith, sent over the top 8 habits that can extend your life, and they might be simpler than you previously believed.

What Are The Eight Habits?

A study from the American Society of Nutrition released last year highlighted the habits that dramatically correlated with living a long life. By adopting the following eight habits from the day you turn forty, next year for mee eep, you can increase your lifespan by twenty-four years for men and twenty-one years for women:

  1. Not abusing opioids
  2. Not smoking tobacco (including vaping)
  3. No alcoholism or regular binge drinking
  4. Managing stress
  5. Having positive social relationships
  6. Eating a healthy diet
  7. Sleeping well
  8. Getting regular physical exercise

Some may seem obvious, but many of these items are life-long habits that can be hard to develop and stick to. So, how do you begin to actually implement them?

1. Diet

Maintaining a healthy diet for a long life is all about finding a sustainable balance you can enjoy, not about feeling deprived. Here’s how to swap restriction for delicious exploration:

Think Abundance, Not Elimination

Instead of focusing on what you can’t have (sugary treats, processed foods), shift your mindset towards adding more vibrant, nutrient-rich options to your plate. This way, you’ll naturally crowd out less healthy choices.

Start Small, Celebrate Wins

Change takes time. This week, challenge yourself to incorporate an additional vegetable serving into every meal. It could be a handful of spinach in your morning smoothie, roasted broccoli with lunch, or a side salad with dinner. Next week, introduce a new type of seed or nut like chia seeds in your oatmeal or almonds in your afternoon yogurt. Celebrating these small wins keeps you motivated and fosters a sense of accomplishment.

Explore the Rainbow on Your Plate

Nature’s candy aisle is overflowing with colorful fruits and vegetables, each packed with unique vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that contribute to overall health. After mastering the art of incorporating more veggies, choose a new “superfood” fruit each week. Think vibrant berries rich in antioxidants, juicy oranges bursting with vitamin C, or a handful of cherries packed with heart-healthy benefits.

Remember, it’s okay to indulge occasionally, so don’t be too hard on yourself if you slip up. The key is to strive for balance and consistency in your eating habits.

-Richard Smith-Bernal

2. Sleep

Getting enough quality sleep is a cornerstone of living a long and healthy life. But let’s be honest, between work deadlines, social commitments, and the ever-present allure of our devices, achieving a perfect eight hours can feel like a distant dream. The good news is, you don’t necessarily need to overhaul your entire schedule to reap the benefits of restful sleep. Here’s how to prioritize the quality of your sleep within the time you have:

Craft a Calming Countdown

Our bodies thrive on routine. Establish a relaxing wind-down ritual 30-60 minutes before bedtime. This could include taking a warm bath, reading a book (not on a screen!), or practicing gentle stretches or yoga poses. These activities signal to your body that it’s time to transition from alert mode to sleep mode.

Tame the Tech Tyrant

The blue light emitted from electronic devices disrupts the production of melatonin, a hormone essential for sleep regulation. Power down your phone, laptop, and tablet at least an hour before bedtime. Opt for a low-tech alternative like reading a book by dim light or listening to calming music.

Craft a Sleep Sanctuary

Your bedroom should be a haven for sleep, not a battleground against distractions. Ensure your room is cool, dark, and quiet. Invest in blackout curtains to block out light, and consider using earplugs or a white noise machine to minimize disruptive sounds.

Embrace the Power of Relaxation Techniques

If worries or anxieties keep you up at night, try incorporating relaxation techniques into your bedtime routine. Simple deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, or guided meditation can effectively calm your mind and prepare you for sleep.

By reducing your exposure to blue light and minimising stimulation, your body can naturally ease into a state of drowsiness earlier, leading to a more restful and rejuvenating sleep.

-Richard Smith-Bernal

3. Exercise

Incorporating regular physical activity into your life is one of the most powerful ways to invest in your long-term health and longevity. But let’s face it, the idea of spending hours on a treadmill or battling through weightlifting sets might not exactly spark joy for everyone. The key to making exercise a sustainable habit (and reaping its amazing benefits) is to find activities you genuinely enjoy. Here’s how to transform exercise from a chore to a source of movement magic:

Discover Your Exercise Personality

Not everyone thrives in a gym environment. Explore different activities to find your perfect fit. Do you crave the social interaction of a group fitness class like Zumba or spin? Perhaps the quiet contemplation of yoga or Pilates resonates more deeply. Maybe you’d enjoy the challenge and thrill of rock climbing or the camaraderie of a local sports league.

Make it Multi-Tasking Magic

Who says exercise can’t be productive? If you’re short on time, combine your workout with another activity you already enjoy. Listen to your favorite audiobooks or podcasts while taking a brisk walk or jog outdoors. Turn your daily commute into a mini-adventure by cycling or scootering to work. These small changes can make exercise feel less like a chore and more like a seamlessly integrated part of your day.

Embrace the Great Outdoors

Nature provides a fantastic (and free!) gym. Hiking, swimming, kayaking – the possibilities are endless. Exercising outdoors not only provides a dose of fresh air and sunshine but can also boost your mood and reduce stress. Grab a friend or family member and turn your workout into a fun social outing.

Start Small and Celebrate Wins

Don’t try to overhaul your entire routine overnight. Begin with small, achievable goals. This could be a 20-minute walk three times a week or a dance session in your living room to your favorite playlist. As you build endurance and confidence, gradually increase the duration or intensity of your workouts. Celebrating your achievements, no matter how small, will keep you motivated and on track.

By finding activities that bring you pleasure, you’ll be more likely to stick with them.

-Richard Smith-Bernal

4. Not Abusing Opioids

This one may seem obvious or completely avoidable, but with opioid epidemics sweeping through communities over the past decade, it’s becoming more challenging to avoid. In fact, most who get swept up in an opioid addiction initially start on benign prescribed opioid-based painkillers for medical reasons.

Fifty million people were prescribed opioids last year in the UK alone. The opioid death rate increased more than ten times in the last ten years in the USA, and similar increases occurred in the UK and Canada.

Don’t take any prescription from your doctor lightly. Talk with your doctor about the risks of opioids and find a plan that balances your need for pain relief with the dangers at hand. And if you find yourself having a hard time getting off the prescription, seek help – the earlier, the better.

5. Avoiding Alcoholism And Binge Drinking

While enjoying a drink with friends or unwinding with a glass of wine after a long day can be a part of a balanced lifestyle, excessive alcohol consumption can significantly impact your health and longevity. Binge drinking, defined as consuming enough alcohol in a short period to raise your blood alcohol content (BAC) to 0.08% or above, is particularly detrimental. The exact number of drinks that constitute binge drinking can vary depending on factors like body weight, metabolism, and gender. For reference, the UK government defines binge drinking as six drinks for women and eight drinks for men within a single session, while the US standard is typically four drinks for women and five for men over two hours.

The good news? Curbing your alcohol intake and avoiding binge drinking is more manageable than you might think. Here are some practical steps to incorporate into your life:

Embrace Alcohol-Free Alternatives

The world of non-alcoholic beverages has exploded in recent years. Explore delicious craft beers, sparkling wines, and innovative cocktails that tantalize your taste buds without the alcohol content. Many restaurants and bars now offer dedicated menus of these flavorful options, so you can still enjoy the social aspects of drinking without compromising your health goals.

BYOB (Bring Your Own Beverage)

Don’t feel pressured to stick to alcoholic drinks at social gatherings. Consider bringing your own sparkling water or fancy juice to add a festive touch. You can even create your own signature non-alcoholic cocktail recipe to share with friends, proving that socializing can be just as fun without the booze.

Hydration is Your Hero

Alcohol dehydrates your body, which can exacerbate feelings of fatigue and contribute to headaches. Make water your go-to beverage throughout the evening, alternating between alcoholic drinks and glasses of water. Staying hydrated will help you feel better and might even encourage you to slow down your alcohol consumption naturally.

Find Fun in Alternatives

Think beyond alcohol when it comes to socializing. Plan activities that don’t revolve around drinking, like attending a sporting event, checking out a live music performance, or hosting a game night with friends. Explore your hobbies and interests, and discover new ways to connect with others that leave you feeling energized and fulfilled.

Focus on the Benefits

Shift your mindset. Instead of focusing on deprivation, remind yourself of the positive changes you’ll experience by cutting back on alcohol. Improved sleep, clearer thinking, and increased energy levels are just a few of the rewards that come with a healthier lifestyle.

With alcohol being such a prominent part of our culture, many underestimate the strong connection it has to chronic disease. It’s never too late to reevaluate your relationship with alcohol.

-Richard Smith-Bernal

6. Avoiding Tobacco

For decades, the health community has been clear – smoking is a major threat to your long-term health. Cigarettes contain a cocktail of over 7,000 chemicals, many of them carcinogenic (cancer-causing) and linked to a plethora of health problems. With the rise of e-cigarettes (vapes), a new player has entered the scene, often marketed as a “safer” alternative. However, this portrayal can be misleading.

Here’s why protecting your lungs from harmful substances, whether traditional cigarettes or trendy vapes, is crucial for a long and healthy life:

The Dangers of Deception

While some e-cigarettes might not contain tobacco, many still contain nicotine, the highly addictive ingredient in cigarettes. Nicotine raises your blood pressure, increases your heart rate, and can harm brain development in young people. Additionally, the long-term health effects of inhaling the various flavorings and chemicals found in vape liquids are still largely unknown, posing a potential risk to your respiratory system.

Beyond the Hype

Vapes often come in sleek, colorful designs and fruity flavors, which can downplay the very real health risks they pose. Don’t be fooled by the marketing tactics. Any product that involves inhaling foreign substances into your lungs has the potential to damage this vital organ.

Prioritizing Your Lungs

Your lungs are the workhorses of your respiratory system, responsible for bringing oxygen into your body and removing carbon dioxide. Protecting them from harmful chemicals is paramount for your overall health. A healthy respiratory system translates to better stamina, improved energy levels, and a reduced risk of chronic lung diseases like COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).

E-cigarettes are not the solution to a smoking problem. Talk to a doctor about other ways to ease off of a nicotine addiction that don’t include harming your lungs.

-Richard Smith-Bernal

7. Positive Social Relationships

Building and maintaining positive social relationships throughout life is crucial for our well-being. Recently, the United States Surgeon General raised concern about a “loneliness epidemic,” which became even more pronounced during the Covid-19 pandemic. Loneliness can have severe consequences for both physical and mental health, including increased stress, depression, and even a higher risk of certain chronic illnesses.

Fortunately, there are many ways to combat loneliness and cultivate meaningful connections with others. One option is volunteering your time and skills to help others in your community. Volunteering not only allows you to make a positive impact but also provides opportunities to meet like-minded individuals who share your interests and values. You can also discover other social activities in your community, such as local sports leagues or art classes.

Technology can also be a valuable tool for finding and maintaining social connections. Online resources such as meetup groups and social networking platforms provide opportunities to connect with people who share your interests or hobbies. Additionally, there are now apps specifically designed to help individuals find platonic friendships, functioning similarly to dating apps but focused on fostering non-romantic relationships.

8. Managing Stress

Stress. It’s a part of life, but letting it become a constant companion can wreak havoc on your health and well-being. Chronic stress weakens your immune system, increases your risk of heart disease, and can even contribute to mental health struggles like anxiety and depression. The good news? You have the power to manage stress and prevent it from taking control. Here’s how incorporating healthy habits can become your personal stress-fighting toolkit:

Fuel Your Body Right

The food you eat directly impacts your energy levels, mood, and overall resilience to stress. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins provides your body with the essential nutrients it needs to function optimally. Say goodbye to processed foods and sugary treats that can contribute to mood swings and energy crashes. By nourishing your body with healthy choices, you’re laying the foundation for a calmer, more stress-resistant you.

Move Your Body, Manage Your Mood

Exercise isn’t just about physical fitness; it’s a potent stress-buster. Physical activity releases endorphins, those feel-good chemicals that elevate your mood and combat stress hormones. Find an activity you enjoy, whether it’s a brisk walk in nature, a heart-pumping dance class, or a relaxing yoga session. Even just 20-30 minutes of moderate exercise can significantly reduce stress levels and leave you feeling more centered and energized.

The Power of Positive Connections

Humans are social creatures, and strong social connections are vital for emotional well-being. Spend time with loved ones who support and uplift you. Develop a network of friends who share your interests. Social interaction provides a sense of belonging, reduces feelings of isolation, and offers a buffer against stress. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help from friends, family, or a therapist if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Sleep: Your Stress Sanctuary

Chronic sleep deprivation can exacerbate stress and make it harder to cope with challenges. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. Develop a relaxing bedtime routine to wind down before sleep. Create a sleep-conducive environment in your bedroom – cool, dark, and quiet. By prioritizing quality sleep, you’re giving your body and mind the rest they need to recharge and face stress with renewed resilience.

Think of it as a two-in-one package. Each positive habit you incorporate contributes to both your overall well-being and your ability to cope with stress.

-Richard Smith-Bernal

The Power Of One

Another key finding of the study is that adopting just one of these habits can increase your lifespan. Earlier is better, but adopting just one of these habits in your 40s, 50s, 60s, or even in your 90s makes a difference.

It’s never too late to make a positive change in your health. Give yourself grace and ease into positive habits over time.

We all have passions that make our free time more special. Maybe it’s getting lost in a world of watercolors, whipping up culinary masterpieces, or tinkering with tech gadgets. But what if your hobby, the very activity that brings you joy, could also bring in some extra cash? Intrigued? Me too!

In my eternal quest for self-improvement (and maybe a little financial freedom!), I’ve embarked on a mission to explore the exciting world of turning hobbies into side hustles.

This isn’t about sacrificing your passion for profit. Instead, it’s about unlocking the hidden earning potential within the things you already love to do. So, grab a cup of coffee (or your crafting supplies!), and get ready to dive into 5 fantastic hobbies that can be transformed into lucrative side hustles.

To help me out, Jason Higgs, the Senior Deals Strategist at Bountii, sent over five ideas to consider, from gardening to crafting.

Grow Your Own Produce

Gardening is a rewarding hobby that will get you out in the sunshine – and it can also save you money on groceries.

Local farmers markets are a fantastic way to sell your homegrown produce directly to consumers. People love the freshness and flavor of locally grown food, and you get the satisfaction of knowing your hard work is enjoyed by others.

Not every garden needs to be a sprawling landscape. Consider specializing in a unique variety – heirloom tomatoes, exotic herbs, or even edible flowers. These specialty items can fetch a higher price at farmers markets or even through online platforms that cater to niche produce.

Don’t stop at selling just fruits and vegetables! Use your harvest to create value-added products like jams, jellies, pickles, or even dried fruit snacks. This allows you to extend your earning potential and cater to customers who are looking for ready-made, delicious treats.

Plant a vegetable patch or tend to a small allotment and enjoy the satisfaction of growing your own fresh produce. If you have a surplus, consider selling your goods at a local farmers’ market or setting up an honesty box stall outside your home.

Craft Unique Items

Unleash your creativity by making handmade items such as jewellery, clothing, or home decor. Do you specialize in hand-knitted scarves with a whimsical flair? Or perhaps you create intricate jewelry pieces using recycled materials? Identifying your niche allows you to target a specific audience and stand out from the crowd.

Once you’ve honed your craft, it’s time to showcase it! Here’s where your marketing savvy comes in. Online marketplaces like Etsy and Amazon Handmade are great platforms to reach a global audience. Explore local craft fairs and farmers markets to connect with customers in your community. Social media is your friend – create beautiful and engaging content to showcase your work and build a following.

Don’t undervalue your creations! Factor in the cost of materials, the time it takes to craft each piece, and your desired profit margin. Research similar items on the market to get a sense of fair pricing. Remember, your unique skills and the time invested deserve to be reflected in the price tag.

You could sell your creations on online platforms like Etsy or at craft fairs. Upcycling and repurposing materials can help keep costs down and is great for the environment.

Freelance Your Skills

The freelance landscape is booming, offering a world of possibilities for those with valuable skills and a desire for flexible work. Platforms like Fiverr have opened doors for countless individuals to turn their talents into income.

What sets you apart? Are you a whiz at graphic design, a social media mastermind, or a coding guru? Identifying your niche allows you to target specific client needs and establish yourself as an expert in a particular field.

Think of your Fiverr “gigs” as mini-advertisements. Use clear, concise language to describe your services, highlighting the benefits you offer. Showcase relevant work samples and tailor your packages to address different client needs and budgets. Eye-catching visuals and positive client reviews can further strengthen your profile.

Websites like Upwork and Fiverr allow you to offer your services in areas such as writing, web development, or anything else you can think of. You can set aside time each week to complete freelance projects alongside your regular job. This will let you participate in your hobby – for example, graphic design – while also getting paid for it.

Rent Out Equipment

We all have those beloved tools of the trade – the camera that captured priceless memories, the power tools that built your dream deck, or the musical instruments that serenaded countless evenings. But what if these cherished possessions, currently gathering dust in your garage or closet, could also generate some extra income? If you have expensive equipment gathering dust, such as cameras, tools, or sports gear, consider renting it out.

Websites and apps like Fat Llama, RentLend, or Neighbor have become the Airbnb of stuff. These platforms connect you with potential renters, handle payments securely, and often offer insurance coverage for your equipment. Research different platforms to find the one that best suits your needs and equipment type.

High-quality pictures showcase your equipment’s condition and features. Detailed descriptions highlight its capabilities and any unique accessories included. Be clear about rental terms, including pick-up and drop-off procedures, security deposits, and late fees.

Platforms like Fat Llama connect owners with renters, allowing you to earn passive income simply by lending out your stuff to others.

Create A Blog Or Channel

With the rise of content creation platforms, turning your hobby into a profitable blog or channel is more achievable than ever.

To truly captivate an audience, identify your specific niche within your broader hobby. Do you specialize in hand-thrown ceramics with a minimalist aesthetic? Or perhaps you create historically accurate medieval garb with a focus on sustainability? The more specific your niche, the more you’ll attract a dedicated fanbase who share your passion.

Offer valuable, engaging information that caters to your target audience. This could include informative tutorials, captivating project ideas, historical deep dives, or even equipment reviews. Focus on providing solutions, sparking inspiration, and keeping your audience entertained and informed.

Explore options like affiliate marketing, where you earn commissions by recommending products you use and love. You can also offer sponsored content, partnering with brands relevant to your niche. Selling your own creations, like handcrafted goods or downloadable patterns, is another fantastic way to monetize your passion.

You can create a blog or YouTube channel showcasing your passion for just about any hobby and monetize it through advertising or sponsorships. For example, if you enjoy hiking, you could post videos of your adventures, or make videos advising others on the best hiking and camping techniques. Just make sure to prioritise hobbies you genuinely enjoy to maintain your motivation and avoid burnout.

How To Avoid Back Pain When Driving

On the JJ Barnes Blog, as I have struggled with back pain all my life, and had to give up many activities thanks to the damage, I decided to check out how to avoid back pain when driving.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

For as long as I can remember, back pain has been a shadow hanging over me. It’s forced me to give up sports and dance classes, seen me having hours and hours of physiotherapy, and I’ve even been hospitalised with the pain. Quite frankly, it’s a bloody nuisance. However, as long as I’m careful, I’ve become quite adept at avoiding the twinges after years of learning how to get by.

However, recently I’ve found that driving has started leaving me sore. While it’s not yet dangerous, I definitely don’t want to have to give up my car, and really, who hasn’t at some point emerged from a long drive feeling like a pretzel gone wrong?

Join me as I delve into the world of back-friendly driving, exploring tips, tricks, and expert advice so that maybe, just maybe, we can reclaim the freedom of the open road (or at least, the supermarket carpark) – pain-free!

To help me out, Dr. Tony Nalda, who leads the Scoliosis Reduction Center, has sent over his expert strategies to help make your next road trip a journey free from the burden of back pain.

Ergonomics And Posture

The foundation of a pain-free drive lies in proper posture. Imagine a straight line running from your earlobe through your shoulder and hip. This is your ideal alignment. Adjust your seat so your knees are slightly bent and your thighs are well-supported.

The way you grip the steering wheel can significantly impact your back. Hold the wheel at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions, keeping your elbows slightly bent. This distributes pressure evenly across your shoulders and prevents neck strain.

Ensuring your driving environment is set up for optimal spinal support is key. Our lower backs crave support, and this is where an ergonomic back pillow becomes your knight in shining armor. Look for a pillow that fills the curve of your lumbar spine, promoting proper posture and reducing strain. Choose a firm yet comfortable material that won’t flatten over time. You should also adjust your seat and steering wheel to give you better driving posture.

Invest in an ergonomic seat cushion specifically designed for lumbar support. An ideal seat cushion supports the natural curve of your spine, reducing pressure on the lower back and promoting a more comfortable posture.

-Dr Nalda

Breaks Are More Than Pit Stops

Sitting for long stretches tightens your muscles and compresses your discs. Breaking up the journey with short bursts of movement works wonders. A quick walk around the petrol station, some stretches by the car, or even a few jumping jacks can make a world of difference. These breaks are crucial for preventing stiffness and improving blood circulation, and frequent breaks not only alleviate physical strain but also refresh your mind for a safer drive.

Aim for a pit stop every 2-3 hours, or even more frequently if you’re prone to back pain. Listen to your body – if you start to feel achy or stiff, that’s your cue to pull over.

Plan your breaks wisely. Get out, stretch, and walk around. You can also engage in simple exercises like knee-to-chest stretches or seated twists to keep your back flexible.

-Dr Nalda

Stretching On-The-Go

Simple stretches can be done right in your car. Neck rolls, shoulder stretches, and seated forward bends can release tension and improve circulation, providing relief even when you’re on the move. These stretches enhance flexibility and prevent stiffness during extended drives, but make sure they don’t affect your concentration on the road. Include deep breathing exercises to promote relaxation and reduce stress, contributing to an overall pain-free experience.

Gently turn your head to one side, bringing your ear towards your shoulder. Hold for 10 seconds, then repeat on the other side. Avoid any jerky movements.

Slowly lower your chin to your chest, feeling the stretch in your neck and upper back. Hold for 10 seconds, then slowly return to a neutral position.

With relaxed shoulders, roll them forward in a circular motion for 10 repetitions. Then, reverse the direction and roll them backward for another 10 repetitions.

By incorporating these expert tips into your journey, you can steer clear of back pain and arrive at your destination feeling rejuvenated. Driving should be an enjoyable experience, not a painful one.

Choose Sunglasses For Your Face Shape

On the JJ Barnes Blog, as Summer approaches, I check out top tips for how to choose sunglasses for your face shape.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

As the sun warms our skin and the days grow longer, it’s time to ditch the winter blues and embrace the sunshine! But with those glorious rays comes the need to protect your eyes. Sure, any sunglasses will do the trick, but why not look fabulous while doing it?

There are many shapes and sizes of sunglasses with different lenses, frames, and styles, so choosing can be a challenge, and it isn’t only the sunglasses you need to get right. You need to understand your face shape as well. To help me out, experts at Oakley have sent over their top tips on how to choose sunglasses for your face shape.

The Importance Of Face Shape

Your face shape plays a significant role in determining which sunglasses will best flatter your features. The most common face shapes include oval, round, square, heart, and diamond. Each shape has its own distinctive characteristics, and by identifying your face shape, you can narrow down the vast array of styles to those that will enhance your natural beauty.

How To Choose Sunglasses For Your Face Shape

Oval Face

Oval faces are versatile and well-balanced, making them suitable for various sunglass styles.

Opt for frames that maintain the natural balance of your face, such as aviators, wayfarers, or cat-eye sunglasses. These styles will complement your symmetrical features and add a touch of sophistication to your look.

Aviators

These iconic shades, originally designed for pilots, were made for oval faces. The teardrop lens shape mirrors the elongation of your face, creating a seamless, balanced look. Classic aviators with a thin metal frame won’t overwhelm your features, but feel free to experiment with bolder styles for a touch of modern edge.

Wayfarers

Wayfarers offer a timeless aesthetic with their wide, slightly trapezoidal frames. For oval faces, these sunglasses add a touch of definition without overpowering your natural harmony. The wider frame size complements the width of your cheekbones, creating a cool and collected vibe. Whether you choose classic black or a trendy mirrored lens, wayfarers are a versatile choice for any summer adventure.

Cat-Eye

Cat-eye sunglasses, with their upswept browline, are a perfect match for oval faces. The upward angle accentuates your cheekbones, adding a touch of sophistication and playful femininity. Look for frames that aren’t too oversized, as you want to maintain the natural balance of your face shape. With cat-eye sunglasses, you’ll channel your inner Audrey Hepburn and turn heads wherever you go.

Round Face

Round faces benefit from angular frames that help create definition and structure.

Look for geometric shapes like square or rectangular frames, which provide contrast to the soft curves of your face. Oversized sunglasses with bold, angular designs can also help elongate your face and add a modern edge to your appearance.

Geometric

The key to sunglass magic for round faces lies in contrast. Square and rectangular frames, with their sharp edges and straight lines, visually balance out your naturally curved features. They create the illusion of a longer, slimmer face by adding definition at the sides. Think of them as chiseling out some cheekbones with a touch of shade!

Oversized

Don’t be afraid to go big! Oversized sunglasses are a perfect choice for round faces. The wider frame provides more coverage, minimizing the roundness of your face. Plus, they add a touch of instant cool and can be a great way to make a statement.

If You Have A Square Face

Square faces have strong, angular features that are complemented by softer, rounded frames.

Consider oval or round sunglasses with curved edges to soften the sharp lines of your face. Round aviators or butterfly-shaped frames can help balance your facial proportions and add a touch of elegance.

Round and Oval

The key to flattering a square face is introducing softer curves. Round and oval sunglasses achieve this beautifully. Their gentle circles and smooth lines act as a counterpoint to the sharp angles of your jawline. This creates a more harmonious overall look, adding a touch of softness and femininity.

Butterfly

Butterfly sunglasses, with their upswept outer edges, are another great option for square faces. The upward angle of the frame draws the eye upwards, elongating the face and softening the strong jawline. Look for styles that aren’t too oversized, as you want to maintain balance, but feel free to experiment with bolder colors and patterns to add a touch of personality.

Heart-Shaped Face

Heart-shaped faces are characterised by a wider forehead and narrower chin.

Choose sunglasses that mimic the shape of your face by opting for styles with wider bottoms and narrower tops. Cat-eye or butterfly frames can help draw attention downward and balance out the width of your forehead.

Cat-Eye

Cat-eye sunglasses boast an upswept browline that mimics the natural curve of your eyebrows. This upward angle draws the eye upwards, minimizing the width of your forehead and creating a more balanced look. Plus, the pointed ends of the frame add a touch of playful sophistication that complements the delicate features of a heart-shaped face. Opt for smaller or subtler cat-eye styles to avoid overwhelming your face.

Butterfly

Butterfly sunglasses, with their wide upper bridge and slightly upswept outer edges, are another fantastic choice for heart shapes. Similar to cat-eyes, the wider top portion balances out the wider upper half of your face, while the upswept ends add a touch of elongation. This creates a more harmonious overall look that flatters your natural bone structure. Choose styles with a balanced design, where the bottom of the frame isn’t too narrow, to ensure a perfect balance.

Diamond-Shaped Face

Diamond-shaped faces feature prominent cheekbones and a narrow chin and forehead.

Look for sunglasses that accentuate your cheekbones and soften your angular features. Oval or rimless frames with gentle curves can complement your facial contours and highlight your natural elegance.

Oval

The elongated shape of oval sunglasses perfectly complements the natural lines of a diamond face. The gentle curves of the frame mimic the shape of your cheekbones, creating a sense of balance and softening their sharpness. This helps to visually widen your forehead and jawline, resulting in a more harmonious overall look.

Rimless

For diamond faces, rimless sunglasses offer a touch of understated elegance. The lack of a frame removes visual weight from your face, allowing your sharp cheekbones to take center stage without overwhelming the rest of your features. This creates a clean and sophisticated look that complements the natural definition of your face shape. Plus, rimless styles come in a variety of lens shapes, so you can still experiment with a touch of personality – think cool gradients or mirrored finishes!

The Power of Sunglasses

Well-fitted sunglasses have the remarkable ability to enhance your facial features, elevate your style, and help you exude confidence. When you find the perfect pair that complements your face shape, you’ll not only protect your eyes from UV damage but also radiate poise and sophistication with every step. By understanding the nuances of your facial features and selecting frames that harmonise with them, you can make a fashion statement that reflects your unique identity.’

Best Ways To Get Your Flight Upgraded

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out top tips from travel experts for how to get your flight upgraded absolutely free!

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

While the opportunity to travel is wonderful, it is also expensive at the best of times, and right now that has never been more true. While we may not want to give up on our sight seeing aspirations entirely, most of us are also looking for ways to cut costs, such as giving up on plane seat upgrades. The problem is, a few extra inches of legroom and a comfier seat can make a big difference to your flight… so I wanted to know if there are any ways we can get this experience without having to pay for it.

To help me out, frequent flyer experts at Flight Hacks have sent over their top tips for getting a free flight upgrade, and explained some of the mysteries behind the seat allocation system, to help us get the most out of their plane tickets.

Free upgrades on flights are rare, but not a myth. Not every plane is fully booked, and sometimes, a free seat in first class is just waiting to be claimed. What’s more, on quieter flights, airline staff often have to move people into these seats to balance the plane, so you’ve just got to make sure you’re the person they pick.

There are plenty of simple tricks to increase your chances of getting an upgrade, but the most important thing to remember is that airline staff are human. It may seem obvious, but being respectful and friendly is by far the best way to increase your chances of an upgrade. Presenting yourself as someone they would want to offer a free upgrade to is what underpins all of these tips

-Immanuel Debeer from Flight Hacks

Best Ways To Get Your Flight Upgraded

1. Stay loyal to one airline

If you fly regularly, staying loyal to one airline can help you maximise your frequent flier miles. Many airlines have a rewards scheme that offers customers free upgrades, early check-in, and even free flights.

A research survey found that 80% of staff said that a customer in the airline’s frequent flier scheme would be more likely to receive a free upgrade. Subscribing to the scheme also indirectly helps, as an early check-in reward places you first in line to secure a seat in the plane’s front section.

2. Travel alone or during quieter times

This tip might seem obvious once you think about it, but a single person on an empty flight is much more likely to get an upgrade than a family of 6 on a booked-out plane. Flying in the middle of the week or at off-peak times increases the chances of a seat upgrade, as the plane is less likely to be full.

Research suggests that almost three-quarters (72%) of cabin crew are more inclined to offer a free upgrade to a passenger who is flying alone. However, traveling alone or at quieter times might make other parts of your journey more expensive, like late-night taxi fees, so use this tip with caution.

3. Dress to impress

Airlines don’t offer free upgrades out of the goodness of their hearts; they do it to gain customer loyalty. Dressing smartly and looking like a frequent flyer is a great tactic to maximise your chances of getting an upgrade.

Business travellers are an airline’s favourite type of passenger as they fly regularly and are more likely to spend freely on their company cards. Wearing business attire is a good strategy for presenting yourself as a customer they want to keep happy and loyal. Moreover, data has found that 59% of cabin crew are more likely to upgrade a well-dressed passenger.

4. Don’t be afraid to ask

It may seem simple, but one of the best ways to secure a free upgrade is to ask politely. It doesn’t hurt to simply inquire if there is any possibility of an upgrade, especially if you are flying alone – your chances are significantly increased by just asking.

5. Be a flexible traveller

Airlines frequently overbook flights to compensate for no-shows and to ensure the planes are full. When everyone checks in and there aren’t enough seats, they often offer incentives to passengers willing to switch to a later flight, ranging from seat upgrades to cash incentives. Flexibility with your flight times presents the perfect opportunity to negotiate a free flight upgrade. However, it is essential to act swiftly, as many other passengers may have the same idea.

6. Take advantage of special occasions

The final tip is to use whatever personal advantage you’ve got. Is it your birthday on the day you fly? Are you on your way to your honeymoon? Is it a special anniversary? Finding a way to casually drop this into a conversation with the check-in staff is a great way to increase your chances of an upgrade.

In fact, research suggests that 58% of cabin crew staff would be more likely to upgrade newlyweds. Chatting with staff about the reasons for your travel is an excellent chance to secure an upgrade, but only if you stick to the most important tip – be polite.

7. Be polite when checking in

There are often no strict criteria on how airline staff choose who should get free upgrades when they’re available. Therefore, the number one tip is to be polite when checking in. If a spare seat in first class is available when you come to check in, airline staff can sometimes choose to upgrade passengers; being friendly and nice automatically increases the chances of an upgrade.

In fact, research from a survey of airline staff, which investigated the top reasons staff choose to upgrade passengers, revealed that a huge 82% would be more likely to upgrade a polite passenger.

Conclusion

Remember, even with these expert tips, free upgrades are never guaranteed. But by implementing these strategies and making yourself a valuable customer to the airline, you’ve significantly increased your chances of experiencing the joy (and comfort!) of a free upgrade.

So, the next time you book a flight, don’t just settle for the standard seat selection. Think strategically, be proactive, and remember – a smile and a friendly attitude can go a long way. Now, go forth and conquer those free upgrades – the luxurious skies await!

Best Foods To Boost Your Libido

On the JJ Barnes Blog, with life being full of stress, anxiety and exhaustion, I check out the best foods to boost your libido, because we all deserve a healthy sex life, no matter how much pressure we’re under.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

Let’s face it, life can be a pressure cooker. Between work deadlines, endless errands, and the ever-present hum of daily anxieties, it’s no wonder our libidos sometimes take a backseat. But here’s the thing: a healthy sex life isn’t just about physical intimacy; it’s about connection, stress relief, and overall well-being.

So, what if I told you there were ways to naturally boost your libido, even when you’re feeling burnt out? While various factors can influence libido, including stress, lifestyle, and hormonal balance, diet can also play a pivotal role.

In this blog post, I’ll delve into the delicious world of libido-enhancing foods thanks to top tips from health expert Dr. Peter White of Phallosan Forte.

Remember, a healthy sex life doesn’t have to be a casualty of our busy lives. By incorporating these simple dietary choices, we can all reignite the flame (in a healthy, delicious way) and rediscover the joy of intimacy, no matter how much pressure life throws our way.

Best Foods To Boost Your Libido

Almonds and walnuts

Nuts, particularly almonds and walnuts, are excellent libido boosters. These crunchy snacks are packed with essential fatty acids, including omega-3s, vital for maintaining hormone balance.

Additionally, almonds are a rich source of arginine, an amino acid that helps relax blood vessels, facilitating increased blood flow. Enhanced blood flow can, in turn, lead to better genital sensation and arousal in both men and women.

Almonds also contain L-arginine, an amino acid that the body converts into nitric oxide. Nitric oxide plays a crucial role in relaxing blood vessels, which can be beneficial for erectile function in men.

Walnuts are champions of omega-3 fatty acids, known for their heart-healthy benefits. But these essential fats might also play a role in sexual health. Omega-3s can improve blood flow and potentially enhance sexual function and desire.

Walnuts also contain small amounts of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward. While the impact of this on libido is not fully understood, it might contribute to a more positive and receptive sexual experience.

Snacking on a handful of nuts daily can help keep your libido firing on all cylinders. Think of almonds and walnuts as part of a well-balanced diet that supports overall health and well-being. This, in turn, can positively impact your energy levels, mood, and potentially, your libido.

Dark chocolate

Next up is dark chocolate. Not only can it satisfy sweet cravings, but dark chocolate also contains flavonoids, which are potent antioxidants that promote cardiovascular health. A healthy heart is essential for optimal blood circulation, including to the genitals.

Dark chocolate, especially varieties with a higher cocoa content (70% or above), boasts a unique blend of ingredients that might contribute to a more fulfilling sex life:

  • Phenylethylamine (PEA): This natural mood elevator acts similarly to the chemicals our bodies produce when we fall in love. PEA can create feelings of euphoria and pleasure, potentially enhancing sexual desire.
  • Serotonin Sunshine: Dark chocolate is a source of serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with happiness and well-being. Lower serotonin levels can contribute to decreased libido, so a boost from chocolate might be beneficial.
  • The Flow Factor: Cocoa contains flavanols, antioxidants that improve blood flow throughout the body. This can lead to better genital sensation and arousal in both men and women.

Avocados

These creamy fruits are rich in monounsaturated fats, which support healthy cholesterol levels and improve blood flow throughout the body. Enhanced circulation can lead to better genital sensation and arousal in both men and women.

Furthermore, avocados are loaded with vitamin E, a nutrient that boosts testosterone production and may enhance sperm quality. Studies suggest Vitamin E deficiency might be linked to lower libido in women, so incorporating avocados into your diet could be a positive step.

Adding avocado slices to your salads or blending them into smoothies can provide a delicious libido-boosting kick.

Spinach

Popeye’s go to superfood is loaded with magnesium, a mineral crucial for muscle function and nerve transmission. Spinach is a good source of magnesium, a mineral crucial for healthy blood flow. As with other libido-linked foods, improved circulation can lead to better genital sensation and arousal in both men and women. Magnesium also plays a key role in regulating testosterone levels, making spinach a must-have for maintaining a healthy libido.

Whether sautéed, steamed, or blended into a green smoothie, incorporating spinach into your diet can potently boost your libido.

In summary, the path to a healthy libido begins with the foods we eat. By incorporating libido-boosting foods like dark chocolate, avocados, nuts, and spinach into your diet, you can naturally enhance your performance in the bedroom, as well as improve your quality of life.

It’s important to remember that a healthy libido is not just about physical satisfaction, it’s a reflection of overall well-being.

It’s also crucial to prioritize regular exercise, manage stress effectively, maintain a healthy weight, limit alcohol consumption, and avoid smoking. Engaging in consistent physical activity not only improves cardiovascular function and enhances blood flow, crucial for sexual arousal and performance, but also boosts testosterone levels, the hormone vital for maintaining a healthy sex drive.

Additionally, exercise helps to manage stress, a common libido killer, by promoting the release of endorphins, the body’s natural mood elevators, and reducing cortisol levels, the stress hormone.

How To Relieve Eye Strain

On the JJ Barnes Blog, as I work from home and spend most of the day on my computer, I check out top tips for how to relieve eye strain and the benefits of eye exercises.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

I have been working from home for the majority of my adult life, and since the pandemic, even more people found their daily office visits have been replaced by the comforts (and occasional distractions) of working from home. While there are undeniable perks to ditching the commute and setting your own schedule, one major downside can be the strain it puts on our eyes. Staring at a computer screen for hours on end can lead to a cascade of unwelcome symptoms, including blurry vision, headaches, and that dreaded dry, gritty feeling.

If you, like me, spend most of your workday staring at a screen, working on your projects and answering a gazillion emails, then you’ll understand the struggle. But I might have found the answer. The experts at Oakley have sent over a list of simple eye exercises that you can incorporate into your daily routine can provide much-needed relief from these issues and promote overall eye health.

How To Relieve Eye Strain

The “Blink Break”

Consistently staring at screens can lead to decreased blinking, resulting in dry, irritated eyes. Combat this by taking “blink breaks.” Every ten minutes, blink rapidly for ten seconds to moisten and refresh your eyes. This exercise helps prevent dryness and maintains eye moisture, reducing discomfort associated with digital strain.

Eye Rolling

Sit comfortably and slowly roll your eyes in a circular motion, first clockwise, then counterclockwise. Repeat this exercise 5-10 times to relieve tension and improve blood circulation around the eyes.

Palming

Rub your palms together vigorously to generate heat, then gently cup them over closed eyes without applying pressure. Relax and breathe deeply for 1-2 minutes while focusing on darkness. Palming helps soothe tired eyes, alleviate strain, and promote relaxation.

Near-Far Focus

Hold a pen or pencil at arm’s length and focus on the tip. Slowly bring the object closer to your nose while maintaining focus, then move it back to arm’s length. Repeat this process 5-10 times to exercise eye muscles and improve flexibility.

Why Should You Do These Exercises?

Extended screen time can lead to digital eye strain, characterised by symptoms like eye fatigue, dryness, and blurred vision. Ignoring these signs can worsen discomfort and may even lead to more severe conditions such as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), symptoms of which include irritated eyes, blurred vision, and severe headaches. Taking regular breaks and practising eye exercises are essential for relieving tension, reducing stress, and maintaining optimal eye health, especially during long work hours at home.

The Benefits Of Eye Exercises

Incorporating eye exercises into your daily routine offers several benefits for overall eye health and well-being. Firstly, these exercises help reduce eye strain and fatigue caused by prolonged screen time, allowing you to work comfortably for longer periods without discomfort. Additionally, practising these exercises can lead to improved focus and concentration, enhancing your productivity and performance while working from home.

Moreover, regular eye exercises aid in the prevention of long-term eye health issues, such as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) and other vision-related problems. By incorporating these exercises into your routine, you can maintain optimal eye health and prevent potential complications in the future.

More Tips To Add To Your Eye Care Routine

  • Ensuring proper lighting in your workspace is essential to reduce glare and optimise screen visibility, minimising eye strain.
  • Adjusting monitor settings, including brightness, contrast, and font size, can further alleviate eye strain and enhance viewing comfort.
  • Utilising blue light-filtering glasses is also recommended to reduce exposure to harmful blue light emitted by digital screens, which can contribute to eye fatigue and discomfort.
  • Taking regular breaks to stretch, hydrate, and rest your eyes, ideally every hour, is crucial for maintaining eye health and preventing fatigue.
  • Practising good ergonomics by maintaining proper posture and positioning your screen at eye level can help reduce strain on your eyes and neck while working from home

About Oakley

Exercises are not the be-all and end-all of your eye care routine, so it is important to check the health of your eyes. You should get an eye test if experiencing discomfort, especially for the first time. You may need prescription glasses, as straining and squinting to focus on the screen could be causing the issues. However, even those who wear glasses and get tested regularly can help keep their eyes healthy with simple exercises.

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out top tips for pre-teen skincare so I can learn what trends out there are more likely to harm than help my growing children.

The world of skincare can be overwhelming, especially for pre-teens who are being bombarded with social media trends and conflicting advice. I’m sure that like me, you want your child to feel confident and embrace healthy skincare habits, but with so many “miracle” products and routines out there, it’s hard to separate fact from fiction. As my daughters are growing up fast, I want to make sure I’m in the best position to advise and guide them.

In recent months, there has been a growing concern over pre-teens and teenagers using an excessive amount of luxury skincare products. However, many of these trending products are age-restricted due to the potential damage they may cause to young people’s skin. So I wanted to learn what the truth is, and how I can help my children take care of their delicate skin in the healthiest way.

To help me out, experts at the beauty and wellness marketplace, Fresha, have sent over a list of top tips for pre-teen skincare routines.

Pre-Teen Skincare

Risky Products To Avoid

Retinol

Retinol has become a popular product on social media that is widely used by beauty influencers. However, due to the product’s anti-aging ingredients, it is generally only to be used by people in their mid-twenties and older.

When prescribed by a doctor or a dermatologist, retinol can be used as an acne treatment. Other than this, it is an entirely unnecessary product to be used by pre-teens because it can have some damaging consequences on juvenile skin.

Retinol can irritate pre-teen’s skin due to the product’s high acid levels and can cause premature skin damage. The product also reduces the skin’s natural protection against the sun, making retinol users more susceptible to UV rays and sun damage.

Hydroxy Acid

Like retinol, hydroxy acid is typically used to prevent wrinkles and fine lines. Due to the product’s anti-aging ingredients, it’s generally advised not to be used by people under the age of 25.  Due to the product’s high acid levels, pre-teens should avoid it altogether.

When used on adolescent skin, hydroxy acid can irritate and worsen skin conditions due to the product’s removal of the top layer of skin cells. Hydroxy acid, like retinol, can also make users more susceptible to lasting sun damage, which is why pre-teens should avoid it unless prescribed as acne treatment.

Ultimately, pre-teens should steer clear of anti-aging products entirely. As well as causing potential skin damage, anti-aging products can also spark harmful and pre-mature insecurities about wrinkles and other natural effects of aging.

Exfoliating Acid

Most exfoliating acids are too harsh to be used on young people’s skin and should be avoided in pre-teen skincare routines. The products contain high levels of acid, which are intended to remove dead skin cells but ultimately irritate pre-teens’ skin. Experts have also suggested that exfoliating acids may even disrupt the natural skin barrier, causing itching, dryness, and skin swelling.

Once again, it’s also risky for pre-teens to use exfoliating acids due to the increased risk of sun damage, making it a product to avoid in pre-teens’ skincare routines. It’s important to note that pre-teens can use milder exfoliating acids as acne treatment, but only when advised by a doctor or dermatologist.

Vitamin C Serum

Some benefits of vitamin C serums include reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Because of this, vitamin C serums are an unnecessary product to be used in pre-teens’ skincare routines.

Skin experts have also debated the safety of vitamin C serums for children’s skin. Some claim these serums can worsen skin conditions like eczema due to the product’s high acid levels. Overall, it’s best to steer clear of expensive serums entirely, as the anti-aging benefits of these products will be entirely unnecessary for pre-teens.

Safe Pre-Teen Skincare

Despite the dangers of some viral skincare products, pre-teen skincare doesn’t have to be an entirely negative subject. It can be positive for pre-teens to express an interest in looking after their skin, which is why some products can be a great place to start a safe skincare routine.

Moisturiser

Moisturiser is an essential part of many skincare routines and a safe product for pre-teens. A light layer of light moisturiser can improve hydration and prevent dryness, so it’s a great introduction to the world of skincare.

Our skin has a natural barrier that protects us from irritants and helps retain moisture. Pre-teen skin is still developing this barrier, and dryness can weaken it. A light moisturizer helps lock in hydration and keeps the barrier strong, preventing irritation and discomfort.

Hormonal changes can make pre-teen skin more sensitive. A light, fragrance-free moisturizer can calm irritation and reduce redness, keeping your child’s skin feeling comfortable and healthy.

Pimple Patches

Applying a pimple patch on a blemish can reduce redness and inflammation, making them a fun and exciting product for pre-teen skincare routines. Pimple patches act as a physical barrier, preventing pre-teens from picking at blemishes, which can worsen breakouts and lead to scarring.

Pimple patches are infused with ingredients like hydrocolloid, which helps absorb pus and reduce inflammation. This can be appealing for pre-teens dealing with occasional breakouts. These patches are thin and transparent, making them virtually invisible on the skin. They’re also easy to use and can be worn throughout the day or night.

But be aware, pimple patches are a temporary fix, not a cure. Addressing the underlying cause of breakouts (hormonal changes, diet, etc.) is crucial for long-term skin health.

SPF

Due to the popularity of these products on TikTok, many pre-teens may already be applying SPF products in their skincare routines. #SPF currently has over 6 billion views on TikTok and has over 232,000 posts, showing its relevance on social media.

SPF products are an incredibly safe and beneficial product to incorporate into pre-teen skincare routines as they provide protection against the sun. SPF should always be the last step in any skincare routine and should be applied at least 20 minutes before going outside for maximum effect.

While some might think sunscreen is just for beach days, incorporating SPF into a daily skincare routine is crucial for healthy skin, even on cloudy days. Sunburns are not just uncomfortable; they can also increase the risk of skin cancer later in life. Using SPF daily, even on cloudy days (UVA rays penetrate clouds!), helps prevent painful burns and protects their precious skin.

Mild Cleanser

Cleansing is an effective way to rid your skin of dirt and oil, making it a reliable breakout preventive. Because of this, mild cleansing products, such as gel cleansers, can be a safe and refreshing part of a pre-teen skincare routine.

Pre-teen skin can be easily irritated, especially during hormonal fluctuations. A gentle cleanser free of harsh chemicals and fragrances minimizes irritation and keeps their skin feeling comfortable and calm. While some cleansers promise to eliminate blemishes overnight, they can often do more harm than good. A gentle cleanser removes dirt and excess oil without over-drying, which can actually worsen breakouts.

Consistent use of a gentle cleanser lays the foundation for healthy skin habits in the future. Pre-teens learn the importance of cleansing without irritation, setting them on a path to healthy, balanced skin.

Pre-Teen Skincare Conclusion

People must be aware of the risks some skincare products can have on young people’s skin. While pre-teens and teenagers may be easily swayed by skincare influencers on TikTok, it’s essential to do your research before applying the products you see online.

However, pre-teen skincare doesn’t have to be ruled out completely. It’s positive that more and more youngsters are interested in taking care of their skin thanks to social media, but it’s essential to recognise which products may cause more harm than good and instead stick to safer skincare routines.
