Spring has officially sprung (or is about to, depending on where you are in the world)! As the days get longer and the temperatures climb, it’s time to shed those winter layers and embrace the joy of lighter fabrics and fresh colors. But with a season known for its unpredictable weather, building a wardrobe that can adapt to everything from cool mornings to unexpectedly warm afternoons can be a challenge.

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe by investing in high quality staples that exude timeless style, but which ones are worth the money? To help me out, experts at Oakley have sent over a list of the five essential investment pieces that will effortlessly elevate your spring looks and serve as the foundation for endless outfit combinations, allowing you to effortlessly transition between chilly mornings and balmy afternoons.

Top Five Fashion Essentials This Spring

The Tailored Trench Coat

A tailored trench coat is a springtime essential that adds polish and sophistication to any outfit while keeping you warm on those chilly spring mornings. Opt for a neutral shade like beige, black, or navy for maximum versatility. You can layer it over everything from casual jeans and a tee to a chic dress for a timeless and put-together look.

Spring is all about shedding those bulky layers so ditch the heavy winter trench coats and opt for lighter fabrics like cotton or linen blends. These materials will keep you comfortable in warmer weather while still providing a touch of sophistication.

The cinched waist on a trench coat creates a flattering silhouette. Use the belt to accentuate your curves and add definition to your outfit. For a more relaxed look, you can leave the belt untied or loosely tied at the back.

Oakley that a well-fitted trench coat is a wardrobe staple that transcends seasons and trends, making it a worthy investment.

A Structured Blazer

A structured blazer is a must-have for achieving a polished and professional look during the spring months. Choose a classic silhouette in a neutral colour such as black, grey, or camel to ensure versatility. Pair it with tailored trousers for a sophisticated office ensemble, or layer it over a floral dress for a chic juxtaposition of styles. A structured blazer instantly elevates any outfit and adds a touch of refinement to your spring wardrobe.

A blazer isn’t just for the office anymore! This versatile piece can be dressed up or down for any occasion. From brunch dates to evening cocktails, a blazer can be your go-to for a touch of effortless polish.

Swap your traditional wool blazers for lighter fabrics like linen, cotton, or seersucker. These breathable materials will keep you cool and comfortable on even the sunniest days, while maintaining the structured look of a blazer.

Spring is a celebration of colour so why not embrace the season with pastel hues like lavender or baby blue, or opt for bolder choices like emerald green or coral. Feeling classic? A cream or white blazer instantly adds a touch of sophistication.

The Timeless White Shirt

A white shirt is a wardrobe essential that effortlessly transitions from casual to formal settings. Invest in a well-made white shirt with quality fabric and classic tailoring for a versatile piece that will stand the test of time. Wear it tucked into high-waisted trousers or a pencil skirt for a polished office look, or layer it under a knit sweater for a preppy vibe. A timeless white shirt is the epitome of effortless chic and serves as the foundation for countless stylish ensembles.

Step away from the crisp, heavy cotton of winter and embrace fabrics that breathe. Opt for breezy linen, airy cotton voile, or even a touch of silk for a luxurious feel. These fabrics will keep you cool on warm days and drape beautifully for a flattering silhouette.

Think beyond the classic white button-down. Spring offers a chance to experiment with details. Try a white shirt with ruffles or eyelet details for a feminine touch, or opt for a white shirt with rolled sleeves for a relaxed vibe. Looking for a touch of edge? A white shirt with statement pockets or a tie-front detail can add some personality to your look.

Quality Denim Jeans

A pair of high-quality denim jeans is a wardrobe staple that offers both comfort and style. Dress them up with a blazer and heels for a sophisticated casual look, or keep it relaxed with a tucked-in tee and sneakers for an effortless weekend style. Investing in quality denim jeans is essential for creating a versatile and timeless wardrobe that can adapt to any occasion.

Spring is all about shedding winter’s weight. Ditch the dark indigo washes and opt for lighter options. Think cool grays, soft blues, and even white denim for a truly breezy look. These lighter washes create a fresh feel perfect for warmer weather. Don’t be afraid to experiment with colour! Spring welcomes pastel hues like lavender or baby pink. Feeling bold? Opt for a pair of red or green jeans for a statement look.

Wide-leg jeans are having a major moment. This flattering cut balances proportions and creates a relaxed, yet chic vibe. Mom jeans, with their high waist and relaxed fit, are back in style. This comfortable silhouette offers a nostalgic nod to the 90s and pairs well with everything from cropped sweaters to flowy blouses. For a timeless look, you can’t go wrong with straight-leg jeans. This versatile cut flatters most body types and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Cropped jeans are a great way to show off a statement pair of shoes or add a touch of whimsy to your outfit. Pair them with flats for a casual vibe, or elevate them with heels for a night out.

A Crossbody Bag

A crossbody bag is a practical yet stylish accessory that adds a touch of sophistication to any outfit. The hands-free design makes it perfect for on-the-go days, while the timeless aesthetic ensures it remains a staple in your accessory collection for years to come. It also has the distinct advantage of being more secure than an on-the-shoulder bag or handbag. A crossbody bag is a versatile investment piece that combines style and functionality, making it the perfect accessory for completing your spring looks.

Spring is all about streamlined style. While you want enough space for your daily essentials, avoid overly bulky bags that weigh you down. Small to medium-sized crossbody bags are ideal, offering enough room for your phone, wallet, keys, and maybe even a light sweater or book.

First things first, think about your lifestyle. Are you a busy professional who needs to carry essentials like a laptop and planner? Or are you a weekend wanderer seeking a lightweight bag for strolling through farmers markets and exploring the city? Choosing a bag that suits your daily needs is key.

Spring is the season for fresh colors and playful patterns. Don’t be afraid to choose a bag that reflects your personality. A pop of color like pastel pink or lavender can instantly elevate your outfit. Feeling bold? Opt for a bag with a floral or geometric print for a statement look.

How To Protect Your Garden Furniture

On the JJ Barnes Blog, with the UK weather crashing wildly from freezing to wet to warm, sometimes all in one day, I check out how to protect your garden furniture no matter the conditions!

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

Let’s face it, UK weather is a fickle beast. One minute you’re basking in sunshine, the next you’re battling a hailstorm. And for our beloved garden furniture, this constant fluctuation can be brutal. From scorching heat to icy chills, and everything in between, our outdoor havens take a beating. Recent weather forecasts predict highs of 20 degrees and sunshine, along with high wind and storms, meaning gardens will be faced with a wide variety of climates. The varied weather has likely lead to the recent 420% increase in searches for ‘garden furniture treatment’, as homeowners look to protect their garden furniture.

But fear not. Today, I’ll delve into the best protection methods for all types of materials, from classic wood to modern metal, ensuring your patio oasis remains a source of comfort and style all year round thanks to top tips from Ali Wooldridge, co-founder of luxury garden furniture company, Gardenesque.

How To Protect Your Garden Furniture

Wet And Cold Weather

Cover with a waterproof material.

When the heavens open and unleash a deluge, the first line of defence for your precious garden furniture is a good quality waterproof cover. These trusty shields come in various shapes, sizes, and materials, offering a solution for every furniture type and budget.

Ensure that you regularly lift and waft your covering to allow airflow and prevent condensation, as this can lead to mildew, and in worst case scenarios, mould or rust.

-Ali Woodridge

Material Matters:

Heavy-duty Polyester: A popular choice, offering a balance of affordability and durability. Look for a denier rating (indicating fabric thickness) of 420D or higher for year-round protection.

PVC-backed Polyester: Provides excellent waterproofing and is ideal for wet climates. This material can trap moisture underneath during hot periods, so ensure proper ventilation with air vents.

Breathable Fabrics: These allow moisture vapour to escape, preventing mildew build-up under the cover. Perfect for furniture left outside for extended periods.

Finding the Perfect Fit:

Measure Up: Don’t rely on guesswork! Measure your furniture carefully, including the highest point (think chair backs or parasol tips) to ensure complete coverage.

Shape Up: Covers come in various shapes to fit different furniture configurations. Square or rectangular covers work for tables and chair sets, while L-shaped options cater to corner sofas.

Drawcord Security: A tight fit is essential to prevent wind from billowing the cover and causing damage to your furniture. Look for covers with drawstrings at the hem for a secure fastening.

Bonus Features:

Air Vents: As mentioned earlier, air vents help prevent condensation build-up under the cover, especially during hot weather.

UV Protection: Some covers offer added UV protection, safeguarding your furniture from sun bleaching and extending its lifespan.

Easy Cleaning: Look for covers with a wipeable surface for effortless cleaning of dirt and grime.

Apply relevant treatments.

Whilst keeping your garden furniture dry and away from wet and cold environments, applying the correct treatment will also ensure for optimum protection and keep the furniture looking its best.

Apply varnish or teak oil that is specifically for hardwood at least twice a year to keep it in optimum condition and protect the wood from moisture and rain.

Most people think that metal is weatherproof, and whilst it is more durable than other materials, many metals will need a regular polish or wax to protect from moisture and rust through colder and wetter weather.

However, powder coated aluminium, which we favour in our products, can uphold many weather states and is very durable, making it an excellent low maintenance choice. There’s only need to treat if the powder coating is damaged.

-Ali Woodridge

For the Wood Whisperers:

Wood Oil: A natural choice for nourishing and protecting wood. A sealing wood oil penetrates the grain, repelling moisture and preventing cracks. Apply annually for optimal results, and choose from clear options to maintain the natural wood look, or tinted versions for a colour refresh.

Wood Stain: Offers a dual benefit of colour enhancement and protection. Wood stains come in transparent, semi-transparent, and solid varieties, allowing you to subtly change the wood’s tone or completely revamp its look. Reapplication frequency depends on the chosen stain type.

Varnish: Creates a hard, protective film on the wood surface, shielding it from moisture and UV rays. Wood varnish is ideal for high-traffic areas but can alter the wood’s natural look slightly. Re-application is typically needed every few years.

For the Metal Mavens:

Metal Paint: A fantastic way to revive weathered metal furniture and add a pop of colour. Choose an anti-rust metal paint specifically designed for outdoor use, ensuring long-lasting protection.

Metal Polish: For unpainted metal furniture, a good quality metal polish can work wonders. It removes dirt, grime, and light oxidation, leaving behind a gleaming finish. Apply regularly to maintain the shine.

For the Rattan Royalty:

Rattan Cleaner: Keeping rattan furniture clean is key to preventing mildew growth. Opt for a dedicated rattan cleaner that won’t damage the delicate material.

Rattan Protector: This spray-on treatment forms a barrier against moisture and UV rays, extending the lifespan of your rattan furniture.

Store away.

To avoid any interior damage to your wooden garden furniture, it’s important to keep it stored away in a dry, covered place, such as a shed or garage, especially for softer woods as they’re porous.

It’s the combination of rain and cold temperatures that cause the most damage for the likes of timber and eucalyptus wood. When the temperature drops below zero, any water and moisture within the wood will freeze and then thaw once temperatures rise, causing the wood to swell.

-Ali Woodridge

Sunshine.

Apply UV protection.

Most rattan and hardwood garden furniture will require a UV protection to maintain their unique colouring and ‘new’ look.

Some rattan furniture, such as our rattan collection, is made from plastic, and so tends to be more durable against UV rays. However, you might want to consider UV protection treatments  in either spray or wax form to ensure they don’t fade when exposed to continuous UV rays over a prolonged time.”

But given the UK’s windier weather, it’s best to add that extra layer of UV protection through the spray or wax.

-Ali Woodridge

Shade is King: The simplest and most effective way to combat UV damage is to provide shade for your furniture. Consider a retractable awning, a parasol, or strategically placed plants to offer respite from the sun’s rays.

Protective Covers: When not in use, invest in high-quality waterproof covers with built-in UV protection. These act as a physical barrier against the sun, preventing direct exposure and safeguarding your furniture.

UV-Treated Materials: Many modern furniture materials come with inherent UV protection. Look for options like weatherproof wicker or marine-grade teak which are naturally resistant to sun damage.

Treatment Solutions: For existing furniture, consider applying a UV-protective sealant or oil. These treatments create a barrier against UV rays and can prolong the life and vibrancy of your pieces. Reapplication may be necessary depending on the product and the amount of sun exposure your furniture receives.

High winds.

Fasten down furniture.

Whilst hardwood garden furniture can outstand the average UK wind speed, when it comes to stormy weather, Ali says it is a good idea to fasten down your furniture if you don’t have storage space, whether that be wood, rattan, or metal, to ensure it doesn’t blow away.

Weight it Down:

Sandbag Saviours: Sandbags are a classic and versatile solution. Fill sturdy bags with sand or gravel and strategically place them on the base of your furniture legs. You can even secure them with bungee cords for extra security.

Pot Power: Heavy plant pots filled with soil or stones can be used to weigh down lighter furniture pieces like chairs. This is a space-saving option, allowing you to add greenery to your patio while keeping your furniture secure.

Anchor it Down:

Stake it Out: For more permanent solutions, consider using furniture stakes specifically designed for anchoring down tables, chairs, and sun loungers. These stakes typically screw into the ground and have a mechanism to secure the furniture leg.

Screw it On: For heavier furniture pieces like wooden benches or pergolas, consider screwing them directly into a sturdy patio base. This offers the most secure fastening, but ensure the screws are suitable for both the furniture material and the patio surface.

Tie it Down:

Bungee Buddies: Bungee cords are a quick and easy solution for securing lighter furniture. Wrap the cord securely around the furniture frame and attach it to a fixed object like a fence post, railing, or a sturdy tree branch. Ensure the object you’re attaching to can withstand strong winds.

Strapping Solutions: Heavy-duty straps offer a more secure alternative to bungee cords. Look for straps with buckles or clips specifically designed for securing outdoor furniture. They come in various lengths, allowing you to customise the fastening to your furniture configuration.

Regularly clean.

Ali advises to regularly brush off any debris, especially in rattan or woven furniture, whereby dirt, twigs and leaves can get stuck in the grooves.

Furniture covers will also protect from leaves, dirt and garden debris that may be blown onto the furniture.

Top Tips To Keep Your House Safe While On Holiday

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out top tips for how to keep your house safe while on holiday so you can relax this summer while you’re traveling away from home.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

If visions of sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and delicious cocktails are dancing in your head as you plan your summer holidays, does a niggling worry creep in to ruin the excitement? Is your house going to be safe while you’re basking in paradise?

With many Brits planning their holidays for 2024, ensuring your belongings remain safe in your home is important, as an empty house could easily be acknowledged by unwanted visitors. Whether you’re heading on a bank holiday getaway or a two-week excursion abroad, anything from gadgets to expensive clothing can be vulnerable without proper precautions being taken.

In this blog post, I’ll delve into the top tips and tricks to transform your home from a potential target into a fortress of security. So, grab your swimsuit, pack your bags, and get ready to relax – with the knowledge that your home is safe and sound.

To help me out, experts at Howden Insurance have sent over their top tips to keep your house safe and reduce the risks of being faced with house damage, stolen items, and loss of personal property upon returning from your holiday.

How To Keep Your House Safe While On Holiday

Make sure to set your alarms

It may seem like the most obvious way to warn off burglars is by simply locking your doors to keep them out, but it can be easily forgotten if you are late for a flight or trying to avoid rush hour – and even when your doors are locked, it does not guarantee that burglars won’t find another way in. Ensure your alarms are set whenever the house is vacant to make sure any unwanted visitors will be caught almost immediately.

Don’t forget, it is still possible to get robbed in broad daylight. Burglars may gain a rough idea of when you will or won’t be in the house, so the likelihood of being robbed in the day can just be as likely as being robbed at night. Therefore, you should make sure your alarms are set throughout at the day as well as the nighttime.

SimpliSafe is a self-monitored or professionally monitored wireless home security system designed for easy installation and use:

  • DIY Friendly: The system is designed for easy self-installation, with pre-configured components and clear instructions. However, professional installation is also available.
  • Multiple Monitoring Options: SimpliSafe offers different monitoring plans. You can choose self-monitoring with mobile alerts or opt for professional 24/7 monitoring with features like dispatching emergency services.
  • Customizable: SimpliSafe allows you to build a system that fits your needs. Choose from a variety of sensors like entry sensors, motion detectors, smoke detectors, and flood detectors. You can also add security cameras for remote monitoring.
  • Easy Control: SimpliSafe offers a user-friendly app to arm and disarm the system, view live camera feeds (if applicable), and receive alerts remotely.

Use smart plugs for lights

Not everyone has sophisticated lights that dim or are on a timer in their homes, but there is no need to run up a huge electricity bill or break the bank by leaving them on all day. Consider purchasing a few affordable smart plugs for lamps around the house, particularly in rooms that will be visible to passers-by. This way, you can turn lights on and off when you like and needn’t worry about leaving lights switched on for hours on end throughout the day and night. As a result, the house will seem as though it still has occupants inside and the property is not empty.

EIGHTREE smart plugs can be a good option to control your lights:

  • Convenience at Your Fingertips: Imagine turning on or off your lights from anywhere using your smartphone or even voice commands with Alexa or Google Home. EIGHTREE smart plugs eliminate the need to physically get up and walk to the switch, offering ultimate convenience.
  • Scheduling and Automation: Set schedules for your lights to turn on and off automatically. This can be helpful for simulating occupancy when you’re away for security purposes or creating a calming bedtime routine.
  • Remote Access and Peace of Mind: Did you forget to turn off the lights before leaving? No problem! With EIGHTREE smart plugs, you can check the status of your lights remotely and turn them off if needed, providing peace of mind and potentially reducing your energy bills.
  • Improved Ambiance: Create the perfect ambiance for any occasion. Some EIGHTREE smart plugs offer dimming capabilities, allowing you to adjust the brightness of your lights to suit your mood or activity.
  • Easy Installation: EIGHTREE smart plugs are known for their user-friendly setup. Simply plug them into an outlet, connect them to your Wi-Fi network through their app, and then connect your lamps to the smart plugs.

Be mindful of social media

It is very easy to forget that it is not always just your friends who can view your profiles on certain social media platforms. As much as everyone likes to show off their chosen holiday destination, it may make your house a more attractive target and increase the chance of a break-in. Social media posts from your activities abroad are entertaining and popular to watch, but the wrong people can easily acknowledge them.

To avoid this, ensure that images or videos you share from your holiday away are only visible to your friends, and turn any accounts on private mode so that only people you trust know your true location. Depending on how much you share on social media, any indication of your whereabouts can be suggestive as to when you are most likely to be away from home.

Let your neighbours and landlord know if you are planning on going away

It is particularly important to let the people around you know if you will be absent for a short while, regardless of whether this is just for a night or two. If neighbours are aware that you’re gone and hear noise coming from around your house, they would know to treat it as suspicious activity and take further action if needed.

If you are a renter, letting the landlord know you aren’t going to be home would be beneficial for their peace of mind as well as yours. They may even visit the property to make small changes, such as giving the curtains and blinds an adjustment so that it looks like someone is home.

Imply security is in place

While your house may not be fitted with CCTV due to its costs, burglars aren’t necessarily aware of this. It may be worth investing in some signs to put in your window or by the front door with ‘CCTV in operation’, or any sign to imply that the house is under surveillance. It is a simple but effective way to warn off burglars, and it won’t be as pricey as genuine surveillance appliances; thus, it is a simple yet effective way to help keep your house safe and secure while you are away.

However, a doorbell that features a camera, such as Ring, may be a worthy investment so that anyone approaching your house can be viewed on your phone, no matter your location; prices can vary from £50 to £300 on websites like Amazon, depending on the brand you select.

Home Safety

Going on holiday should be a joyous occasion where you get to enjoy time away from work with friends or family. However, there is always a concern that intruders could reap the benefits of an empty house filled with lots of valuable possessions, so it is important to be vigilant of your home’s safety when planning a trip. Fortunately, there are certain steps you can take to reduce any worries about your home and make sure you can enjoy your well-deserved holiday to the full extent.

Taking these proper precautions before leaving your house for any reason will put your mind at ease and reduce the chances of a burglary. All techniques are affordable, practical, and a great way to protect your home.

Is Kimchi Good For Me?

On the JJ Barnes Blog, in my continuing efforts to improve my health, I ask is Kimchi good for me and learn about how to eat this fermented superfood.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

In my ongoing quest for a healthier, happier me, I’ve been exploring all sorts of interesting ingredients. Lately, fermented foods have been catching my eye – especially the fiery red beacon known as kimchi. But is kimchi good for me beyond the taste buds? Can this spicy staple from Korea truly be a superfood? Intrigued, I decided to delve deeper into the world of kimchi, exploring its nutritional profile and how to best incorporate it into my diet.

According analysis of Google Trends by sports nutrition experts at Bulk.com, searches for ‘kimchi’ have reached their highest point worldwide in the past five years. This is following a recent study which reported that men who ate up to three servings of kimchi per day reported an 11% lower prevalence of obesity, compared to those who ate less than three servings per day.

Worldwide, searches for the fermented superfood increased by 50.4% between 28 January to 3 February this year compared to the average, to hit its highest search interest in the past five years. This is the equivalent of around 876,000 searches being make worldwide between January and February this year, according to Google Trends extension, Glimpse.

Furthermore, UK searches for ‘kimchi’ have increased by a staggering 153.8% when compared to the five-year average, with around 48,000 searches make between January and February this year. In the UK, the search term ‘kimchi’ also recorded its highest search interest in five years between 28 January to 3 February.

What is kimchi?

Kimchi is a traditional South Korean side dish that is typically made by combining chopped napa cabbage or Korean radish, with aromatics such as garlic, chilli and ginger. It is then left to ferment at room temperature in a salt brine for 1-2 days to improve its taste, texture and health benefits.

There are many varieties of kimchi, with some being spicier than others and some incorporating additional vegetables or seafood. It’s a versatile ingredient that can be enjoyed on its own, used as a condiment, or even cooked into soups and stews.

Why has kimchi become more popular?

Kimchi has gained popularity due to a study published in the medical journal BMJ Open, which suggests that regularly eating kimchi can prevent weight gain.

The study found that men who ate up to three servings of kimchi a day were found to have an 11% lower obesity risk compared to those who ate less than one serving daily.

Plus, globalization and a growing Asian market have made kimchi more readily available in grocery stores around the world. People no longer need to seek out specialty stores to find it.

Why is kimchi good for you?

Due to the fermentation process that kimchi undergoes, it is considered to be a probiotic. The ‘good’ lactobacilli bacteria in kimchi can help to maintain a healthy gut flora and digestion, in addition to reducing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and colon inflammation.

Kimchi also contains choline which helps to maintain your cells, muscles, nervous system and mood, as well as vitamin C, which helps strengthen your immune system and decreases inflammation.

It is also rich in vitamin K, which helps your blood to clot and keeps your bones from becoming brittle.

Where can I find kimchi?

You can find kimchi in the refrigerated section of many major supermarkets or down the world foods aisle. To find more authentic kimchi, try visiting an Asian food store or ordering it online.

Be sure to check the ingredients of your kimchi, to avoid buying ones with added sugar or preservatives, to ensure you are reaping the most health benefits.

How can I add more kimchi to my diet?

Start Small, Spice Up Gradually:

Kimchi can range from mild to fiery. If you’re new to the heat, begin with a small amount on the side or chopped into bite-sized pieces. You can gradually increase the quantity as your taste buds adjust.

Simple Sidekick:

The easiest way to introduce kimchi is as a standalone side dish. Pair it with grilled meats, fish, or tofu for a flavor explosion.

Elevate Your Rice Dishes:

Kimchi adds a vibrant kick to fried rice or plain steamed rice. Saute chopped kimchi with a little oil before adding your cooked rice and vegetables.

Soup and Stew Savior:

Kimchi adds depth and complexity to soups and stews. Toss in some chopped kimchi during the simmering process to infuse the broth with its unique flavor.

Pancake Powerhouse:

Get creative! Add chopped kimchi to pancake batter for a savory and spicy twist. This works great with Korean kimchi pancakes (kimchi jeon) or even your favorite potato or veggie pancakes.

Kimchi Cooking 101:

Kimchi is typically eaten raw, but you can also cook it! Here are some ideas:

  • Sautéed Kimchi: Heat some oil in a pan and saute chopped kimchi for a few minutes until softened. Enjoy it as a side dish or add it to scrambled eggs.
  • Kimchi Stir-fry: Combine kimchi with your favorite stir-fry ingredients like vegetables, tofu, or meat for a quick and flavorful meal.
  • Kimchi Stew (Kimchi jjigae): This hearty Korean stew features kimchi, pork (or tofu for a vegetarian option), vegetables, and a flavorful broth. It’s a perfect comfort food on a cold day.

Remember: Cooking kimchi mellows out the spice and tanginess. Start with a small amount and adjust according to your preference.

Beyond the Basics:

The beauty of kimchi is its versatility. Explore online resources for endless recipe inspiration, from kimchi quesadillas to kimchi mac and cheese. Get creative and have fun incorporating this flavorful fermented friend into your meals!

So, ditch those bulky winter layers, embrace the brighter days ahead, and get ready to unlock your most confident self, one outfit at a time!

To help me out, fashion experts at AN-Y1 sent over a list of fashion tips to dress for confidence, to give you that luxurious, self-assured flair to your outfit, and I’ve explored what we can wear to meet those tips.

Top Tips To Dress For Confidence

1. Dress for the impression you want to convey

Our outfit choices are usually based upon our agenda for the day. Whether your plans entail a casual trip out with friends, a special occasion, or something more formal such as an interview, create your outfit based on the impression that you want to portray.

Make a Bold Statement:

Confident & Creative: A statement jumpsuit in a vibrant color or a power suit with a patterned blouse exudes confidence and individuality.

Modern & Edgy: Play with textures like leather jackets or patent vinyl skirts paired with sleek basics.

Luxurious & Sophisticated: Opt for classic cuts in rich fabrics like silk or cashmere. Think tailored trousers, a crisp white button-down shirt, or a timeless trench coat.

Project Professionalism & Trustworthiness:

Sharp & Polished: A well-tailored blazer, a crisp dress shirt or blouse, and dress pants or a skirt in neutral tones convey authority and competence.

Approachable & Professional: Blazers or cardigans paired with knee-length skirts or dress pants in muted colors create a friendly yet professional air.

Show Your Creativity & Personal Style:

Unique & Playful: Don’t be afraid to mix patterns, textures, and colors! Experiment with vintage finds, statement accessories, or bold prints.

Effortlessly Chic: Elevate casual pieces like jeans with a silk blouse or a blazer. Layer a statement necklace over a simple t-shirt and add a pop of color with a bright scarf.

2. Select colours that boost your mood and evoke happiness

The concept of colour psychology commonly associates colours with moods, so when dressing for confidence it is key to pay attention to how colours make you feel and dress in the colours that make you feel comfortable and confident.

Sunshine Brights: Yellow is like sunshine for your clothes! It radiates warmth, optimism, and happiness. Think sunshine yellow dresses, flowy blouses, or cute accessories.

Soothing Serenity: Light blues and lavenders have a calming effect, promoting feelings of peace and tranquility. Opt for breezy blue dresses, chambray shirts, or lavender cardigans.

Energetic Reds: A pop of red can add a burst of energy and confidence to your outfit. Try a fitted red dress, a statement scarf, or a pair of bold red heels.

Earthy Greens: Green connects us to nature and evokes feelings of balance and harmony. Embrace forest green pants, a flowy emerald blouse, or a printed dress with leafy greens.

Happy Citrus: Citrus colors like orange and lime green are energizing and playful. Add a pop of orange with a statement necklace, a skirt, or a brightly coloured bag.

Classic Whites: White conveys purity, cleanliness, and a fresh start. A crisp white shirt, a flowy white dress, or white jeans can instantly brighten your look.

If your wardrobe is quite limited in colour, or the prospect of matching every outfit is stress-inducing, try accessorising with some small, mood-boosting colour additions instead.

For example, pairing a black or white outfit with an orange or green jacket or bag can work to add that pop of colour for connotations of confidence, peace, and added flair.

3. Create a clothing capsule of confidence

Many people own a few trusty items of clothing that they will look to time and time again, as  staple items that work for a variety of occasions. Don’t be afraid to stick with what makes you feel confident and comfortable.

Whether it’s a statement little black dress, a versatile jumpsuit, or a favourite jacket, these items can be dressed up or down, and accessorised accordingly for any occasion. Wearing clothes we love and feel comfortable in is the key in fashion confidence.

1. Timeless Staples:

Neutral Bottoms: Start with high-quality, well-fitting basics in neutral colors like black, navy, khaki, and beige. Think straight-leg black jeans, a black skirt, tailored trousers, and perhaps a pair of chinos.

Classic Tops: Invest in versatile tops in neutral colors and flattering silhouettes. A crisp white button-down shirt, a comfortable t-shirt, a plain crewneck sweater, and a silk or cashmere blouse are great starting points.

Essential Dresses (Optional): A little black dress (LBD) is a timeless classic, but you can also choose a shift dress, a wrap dress, or a knit sweater dress in a neutral color that suits your style.

2. Layering Pieces:

Blazers & Cardigans: A well-tailored blazer adds instant polish and can be dressed up or down. Cardigans offer a more relaxed vibe and come in various weights for different seasons.

Jackets & Coats: A denim jacket, a leather jacket, or a trench coat are versatile outerwear options that can elevate your outfit and adapt to different temperatures.

3. Consider Your Lifestyle:

Professional Attire: If your work environment is formal, include more tailored pieces like smart trousers, blazers, and sheath dresses.

Casual Chic: For a more relaxed vibe, focus on comfortable basics like t-shirts, sweaters, and relaxed-fit jeans.

Activewear: If you’re active, include workout clothes and comfortable athleisure pieces you can integrate into your everyday looks.

4. Don’t Forget the Shoes:

Neutral Pumps or Flats: A pair of classic ballet pumps in a neutral color like black, nude, or beige offer versatility and can be dressed up or down.

Booties or Boots: Ankle boots or knee-high boots add a touch of edge and can be worn with skirts, jeans, and dresses.

Sneakers (Optional): If your lifestyle is casual, include a pair of comfortable trainers for running errands or everyday wear.

4. Be kind to yourself and put the effort in that you deserve!

Ultimately, no matter which occasion you are dressing for, or which colours and pieces you opt for, being kind to yourself and putting effort into your look goes a long way in growing fashion confidence. Choose pieces that boost your self-esteem, fit your mood, and are comfortable. Take the time to appreciate your outfit choice, no matter how you may be feeling that day, and allow yourself to put the time and effort into your look that you deserve.

Dressing For Confidence

When you’re looking to boost your fashion confidence and elevate your outfit, this doesn’t need to become a chore searching for new pieces in bold shades. Sometimes, it is as simple as selecting your favourite pieces and styles, and adding colour through accessories.

Fashion confidence is sometimes easier to achieve with versatile, timeless pieces. For example, a jumpsuit that you can dress up or down, or a jacket you wear time and time again. Adding in colourful accessories, I find is always effective in exhibiting moods of confidence, energy, and sophistication.

Whatever your agenda for the day, no matter the occasion, these tips can help you to find the pieces that work for you, whilst incorporating colour where you see fit, to generate a luxurious, confident look and boost your mood.

Natural Ways To Deal With PMS

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out the best natural ways to deal with PMS so I can give both myself and my daughters the easiest and most comfortable period experiences possible.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

Periods are a fact of life and while I’ve tried to convince my daughters that they’re a beautiful part of our cycle, I’ve also warned them that the not-so-fun symptoms of PMS (premenstrual syndrome) can leave us feeling like a grumpy troll trapped in our own bodies. From mood swings to bloating and cramps, PMS can leave us feeling less than our best.

As mums, we all want the best for our daughters and ways to help them to navigate their cycles with confidence and comfort, and that starts with us. I have always been very open and honest with my girls, and they feel able to ask me questions and trust me to tell them the truth, and how to deal with the downside of periods is a regular topic. While I’m familiar with painkillers, hot water bottles, and chocolate, I think I could teach them more.

So, now I’m on a mission to find the most effective natural ways to deal with PMS. From dietary tweaks to exercises, I’ll explore a range of options that can help us both conquer those pre-period blues and create a more positive experience around menstruation.

Natural Ways To Deal With PMS

Diet and Supplements

Food isn’t just fuel, it’s information for our bodies. By choosing the right foods and incorporating targeted supplements, we can actually influence how our bodies experience their period.

These aren’t just magical fixes (although wouldn’t that be nice?), but rather tools to support your body’s natural processes. By fueling it with the right nutrients and giving it a little extra boost, you might be surprised at how much better you feel during your period.

Anti-inflammatory Foods

Fill your plate with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. These can help reduce inflammation, a major contributor to cramps. Think berries, leafy greens, fatty fish like salmon, and nuts.

Magnesium Magic

Magnesium deficiency is linked to worse cramps. Include magnesium-rich foods like dark leafy greens, almonds, and avocados in your diet. Consider magnesium supplements after consulting your doctor.

Hydration Hero

Dehydration can worsen cramps. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout your cycle, especially during your period. Herbal teas like chamomile or ginger can also be soothing.

Exercise

When we feel happy and full of energy, this is because our brain is producing a ‘feel good chemical,’ also known as ‘dopamine.’ When a woman’s estrogen and progesterone levels are low right before their period, this can impact dopamine production.

Rowan Cooke, Sport & Exercise Science Specialist at Bulk.com believes exercise for women isn’t just about the physical benefits, but also the mental aspects as well.

Being a woman can be an emotional rollercoaster, with female hormones changing four times per month, this leaves different reactions and impacts on the body.

However, it is scientifically proven that exercise can combat these reactions. When we exercise, we feel a sudden ‘high,’ similar to a mood swing. This is down to the brain releasing a ‘feel-good chemical’ known as dopamine.

Dopamine is a chemical messenger often known as the ‘happy hormone’ that carries signals controlling mental and emotional responses in the brain. Therefore, whenever we exercise, our brains release happy hormones.

-Rowan Cooke, Sport & Exercise Science Specialist at Bulk.com

New research also reveals it could be even more beneficial for women than men. A study of more than 400,000 adults ages 27-61 found that women were 24% less likely than those who do not exercise to experience death from any cause, while men were 15% less likely. Women also had a 36% reduced risk for a fatal heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular event, while men had a 14% reduced risk.

Walking

Walking is a great way to increase dopamine levels, especially in an area with enjoyable scenery and nice weather.

Taking different scenic routes every day can also help to increase dopamine levels, keeping the brain stimulated.

Especially for those working from home, taking at anytime during your working day is beneficial.

Try to walk in the sunlight if you can because when your skin absorbs sunlight and produces vitamin D, this cycle can promote the production of dopamine and serotonin.

Walking at a good pace, around 100-150 minutes per week, is recommended. You can also add some music to your walk to increase dopamine levels.

Yoga

Yoga is another exercise which is excellent for boosting dopamine levels.

Whilst the practice of yoga is focused on relaxation techniques and stretching certain parts of the body that aren’t normally stretched, yoga can also boost dopamine levels by increasing cardiorespiratory output.

These breathing exercises boost mood and enhance communication between the brain and nervous system.

Weight lifting

Weight lifting is also a great mood booster because of the feeling of achievement and motivation as a result.

As you start lifting light and become stronger and increase your weight, dopamine levels will kick in due to a sense of achievement.

Try to lift weights three to four times per week, with essential rest days in between and the target of slightly increasing your weights every two to three weeks.

Swimming

Whilst it can be seen as a higher-intensity sport, swimming is great for boosting dopamine. This is because it can increase the number of certain neurotransmitters in your brain. Particularly immersing yourself in cold water, which stimulates instant endorphins due to the extreme temperature.

If cold plunges aren’t for you, around 30 minutes of swimming in water at room temperature is a significant stimulus for endorphins and dopamine release.

Lifestyle Tweaks

Heat Therapy

Apply heat to your lower abdomen and back with a wearable hot water bottle, heating pad, or warm bath. This relaxes muscles and eases cramps.

Stress Less

Stress can exacerbate PMS and period pain. Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or spending time in nature.

Herbal Allies

Consider natural remedies like ginger, which has anti-inflammatory properties. Chamomile tea may also help with relaxation and cramps. Always consult your doctor before starting any new supplements or herbs.

Self-Care is Key:

Rest and Relaxation

Don’t be afraid to slow down and prioritize sleep during your period. Listen to your body and take breaks when needed.

Massage Magic

Gentle massage of your abdomen or lower back can help ease cramps and tension. Essential oils like lavender or chamomile can be added for a calming effect, but be sure to choose high-quality and dilute them properly before use.

Comforting Clothing

Opt for loose-fitting clothes that won’t irritate your skin and allow for better circulation.

Conclusion

Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to period pain. What works wonders for you might not be the magic bullet for your daughter (and vice versa!). The key is open communication and experimentation. By exploring these natural remedies together, you can create a safe space for open discussion about periods and empower your daughters to navigate their cycles with confidence.

How To Dress Like Taylor Swift’s Eras

On the JJ Barnes Blog, as a massive Swiftie, I decided to check out top tips for how to dress like Taylor Swift’s eras, inspired by her different album styles.

Confession time: I’m a full-fledged, glitter-throwing, lyric-quoting Swiftie. Taylor Swift’s music has been the soundtrack to my life, and her ever-evolving style has always been a source of inspiration. From the sparkling country princess to the sleek pop powerhouse, each Taylor Swift era offers a distinct aesthetic that screams to be recreated.

So, I decided to decipher the style secrets behind each of Taylor’s iconic eras. Whether you’re a fellow Swiftie or simply a fashion enthusiast, this guide will help you channel your inner Taylor and embrace the confidence and creativity that defines her style.

According to experts at Boohoo, some of Taylor’s album eras are much more on-trend this year and fashion experts expect to see a crossover from fashion week to the concert arena. Their analysis looked at the most popular items on the runway this year and analysed each album’s aesthetic against the emerging trends. It also considered Pinterest searches for outfit elements related to each, to identify increases in interest.

The expert identified trendiest eras, Reputation, Lover, Midnights, and Debut, so I’ve taken a look at how we can incorporate looks from those eras and dress like Taylor Swift!

Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour is one of the biggest events happening in the UK this year, and there’s a high expectation for fans to wear statement outfits to pay tribute to their favourite album as the tour really emphasises the importance of aesthetics, ambience, and style.

However, it’s worth considering which of the eras best encapsulates current trends and outfit aspirations, as many fans will be looking to not only pay tribute to the singer’s works, but also look good generally. And while you can’t really go that wrong when dressing for a concert, some albums are much more on-trend than others.

-experts from Boohoo

Reputation

With rumours swirling that Reputation will be Swift’s next re-release under her own label, fans are looking to embrace the aesthetic now more than ever.

The Reputation era marked a significant shift in Swift’s musical and stylistic direction, introducing a darker, edgier aesthetic that reflected her emotional journey and spoke to how she felt largely misunderstood and villainised by her peers.

Understandably, the heart of Reputation fashion embraces boldness and defiance – a stark contrast to her earlier releases.

Those looking to emulate the era this year should consider a high contrast body suit, or alternatively opt for hot pants, as these saw a huge 52% increase in Pinterest searches over the past year. Pair with knee-high or thigh-high boots, snake accessories and a bold red lip for the full effect.

Black is Your Best Friend

Reputation black is all about bold textures that add depth and attitude. Think sleek patent leather for jackets, skirts, or even a pair of statement pants. Distressed denim adds a touch of rock and roll rebellion, perfect for ripped jeans or a cropped denim jacket. For a more luxurious feel, opt for black silk or velvet, ideal for a slip dress or a form-fitting top.

Black can be a blank canvas, but in the Reputation era, it’s the details that make the outfit sing. Look for pieces with zipper embellishments, studs, or metallic hardware on jackets, pants, or even boots. Lace panels or sheer cutouts can add a touch of intrigue while staying true to the dark aesthetic.

The Reputation era is all about confidence and owning your curves. Embrace bodycon dresses that hug your figure or high-waisted shorts paired with a crop top. Oversized blazers with sharp shoulders add a powerful touch, while asymmetrical cuts and ruffled details can introduce a hint of drama.

Snake It Up

Snakes became a powerful symbol of the Reputation era, slithering their way onto everything from music videos to album artwork. While incorporating a live snake into your outfit might be a tad impractical (and potentially dangerous!), there are plenty of ways to add a touch of serpent style and embrace the symbolism of this iconic era.

A silky snake-print scarf adds a touch of pattern and intrigue without being overwhelming. Drape it around your neck, tie it around your purse strap, or even use it as a belt for a versatile accessory.

Snake-print boots, whether ankle booties or knee high stunners, instantly add an edge to your outfit. They pair well with everything from ripped jeans to black dresses. Feeling bold? Top off your look with a snake-print baseball cap or a wide-brimmed hat featuring the slithering pattern. It’s a statement piece that’s sure to turn heads.

Don a chunky snake-print bangle, a statement necklace with a snake pendant, or even delicate snake-shaped earrings. Jewelry is a great way to add a touch of symbolism without going overboard.

Look for clothing with subtle snake details, like a black dress with a snake-shaped sequin pattern or a leather jacket with embroidered snake motifs. These pieces make a statement without being too costume-y.

Red Lips and Bold Liner

The dark and edgy vibes of Taylor Swift’s Reputation era extended beyond clothing and into the realm of makeup. Think bold lips, sharp eyeliner, and a touch of drama. Here’s how to capture that iconic look and unleash your inner rockstar:

This is a non-negotiable! Sharpen your black eyeliner pencil or liquid liner and create a dramatic wing on your upper eyelid. For extra drama, extend the wing further out and even flick it upwards at the end.

If you’re comfortable with a more intense look, try a smokey eye. Use black or dark grey eyeshadow to create a diffused effect on your eyelid, blending it upwards towards your crease. For a touch of unexpected glam, add a subtle shimmer to your inner eye corners using a silver or white eyeshadow.

The Reputation era makeup is all about a bold red lip. Choose a shade that flatters your skin tone – from classic blue-reds to deep berry tones, the options are endless. A perfect red lip requires precision. Line your lips with a red lip liner that matches your lipstick shade for a defined shape. Fill in your lips completely using a lipstick brush for a flawless finish.

Lover

Lover marked a shift to a more romantic and whimsical aesthetic, highlighted by soft pastels, intricate frills, sparkling sequins, and delicate lace. It’s no surprise that it’s appealing right now, given the rise in interest in coquette fashion lately.

And this rise isn’t just on the runways – Pinterest saw a 58% increase in searches for lace outfits and a 54% rise in floral print interest.

Dressing in the Lover era’s style means embracing your inner romantic, softness, and femininity. To take chic to the next level consider adding bows to your hair, accessories or dress as bow aesthetic has seen a whopping 633% spike in Pinterest searches this year.

Colour Crush

Soft, dreamy colors are the foundation of the Lover era aesthetic. Think baby pinks, like spun sugar or rose quartz, calming lavenders, and serene baby blues. Dresses, skirts, blouses, even cardigans – these gentle tones can be incorporated in various ways to create a sweet and romantic look.

Don’t be afraid to turn up the volume! The Lover era welcomed bolder hues that exude joy and optimism. Think sunshine yellows, playful oranges that remind you of a juicy tangerine, and grassy greens that evoke a fresh spring day. A flowy maxi dress in a vibrant yellow or a cute romper in a citrusy orange are perfect ways to make a statement.

For a modern take on the Lover era color palette, try rocking a single bold color from head-to-toe. Imagine a hot pink suit that commands attention or a sunshine yellow dress that radiates warmth – these monochromatic looks are perfect for the fashion-forward Swiftie.

While pinks and yellows are signature colors, the Lover era embraces a broader spectrum. Soft peach, a calming lilac, a cool mint green – all these hues can be incorporated to create a unique and personal take on the aesthetic.

Pattern Play

The Lover era wasn’t just about color; it was a celebration of playful patterns that mirrored the whimsical and romantic mood of the album.

Florals are a no-brainer for the Lover era. Think delicate blooms scattered across a pastel dress, a bold floral maxi skirt that twirls with every step, or even a cute floral bomber jacket for a laid-back vibe. No matter the style, florals instantly add a touch of femininity and evoke the carefree feeling of spring.

Gingham checks are another signature pattern of the Lover era. These preppy squares come in all sorts of variations – pastel pinks and blues for a sweet look, classic black and white for a timeless vibe, or even bolder colors like red and yellow for a fun twist. Embrace gingham in a flowy dress, a cute pair of shorts, or even a trendy gingham blazer.

Feeling adventurous? The Lover era is all about embracing your playful side! Don’t be afraid to mix and match different patterns for a unique and eye-catching look. Try a floral skirt with a striped top, a gingham dress with a polka-dot scarf, or even mix florals with geometric patterns for a truly bold statement.

Romantic Details

Let your outfit speak the language of love! Embrace the theme with heart-shaped details like earrings, necklaces, or even sweaters with embroidered hearts. Butterflies, another symbol of love and transformation, are also perfect. A delicate butterfly necklace, a scarf with a butterfly print, or even a pair of butterfly hair clips can add a touch of whimsy.

A touch of elegance goes a long way in the Lover era. Incorporate pearls into your look with a classic pearl necklace, a pair of pearl earrings, or even a dress with delicate pearl embellishments. Sparkles add a touch of glamour and can be incorporated subtly with a pair of sparkly shoes, a statement bracelet, or even a headband with a touch of glitter.

Chiffon Skirt on the JJ Barnes Blog
Chiffon Skirt

While hearts and butterflies are easy choices, don’t be afraid to get creative! Think about other romantic symbols like lace, ribbons, or soft, flowing fabrics. A dress with a delicate lace overlay, a top with a romantic ribbon tie at the neck, or a skirt made of soft, cascading chiffon can all evoke the essence of the Lover era’s romantic spirit.

Don’t forget the finishing touches! Romantic hairstyles like soft curls, braids adorned with ribbons, or a whimsical headband can add to the overall look. Makeup in the Lover era is light and fresh, with soft pink blush and a touch of shimmer on the eyes for a touch of ethereal beauty.

Midnights

Taylor’s Midnights tour outfits crossover into mob wife fashion – a trend that’s seen an enormous 1,300% increase in search interest this year. To capitalise on this trend, we suggest pairing a fur coat (93% rise in search interest) with a sequin dress.

Another trend on the catwalk this year was ASMR – statement pieces that provide a sensory experience, blending the drama of glitz and glamour with the allure of ASMR. We want to hear your outfit so select statement pieces that not only draw attention visually but also make a pleasing swishing sound like Taylor’s beaded fringe dress.

Embrace the Dark Side (with a Twist)

Flowy silhouettes are key for the Midnights era. Imagine a maxi dress with a cascading skirt that sways with each step, or a silky slip dress that drapes beautifully, creating an air of effortless elegance. High-waisted pants in black or deep blue paired with a cropped top offer a more structured yet still dreamlike look.

Luxurious fabrics like velvet and satin add a touch of glamour to your dark palette. A velvet maxi dress in a deep purple or a satin slip dress in a midnight blue instantly elevates your look. For a more casual vibe, try a black lace top or a sheer chiffon blouse layered over a cami.

Welcome the Lavender Haze

Lavender comes in a beautiful spectrum. Opt for a light, lilac lavender for a touch of ethereal innocence, or a richer plum lavender for a more sophisticated look. Consider the occasion and your personal style when choosing the perfect shade.

Let the lavender color take center stage with flowy silhouettes. Imagine a maxi dress with a cascading skirt in a light lavender that sways with each step. A silky slip dress in a deeper lavender adds a touch of old-Hollywood glamour. Even a romantic blouse with billowing sleeves in a soft lavender creates a whimsical aesthetic.

Layering allows you to play with different textures and create a more dimensional look. Try a lavender camisole layered under a sheer black chiffon top. For a cooler vibe, throw on a lavender knit cardigan over a flowy white dress. Don’t be afraid to experiment with textures like lace, chiffon, and silk for added visual interest.

Sparkling Touches for a Midnight Fairytale

Ditch the blinding disco ball effect. The Midnights era calls for a more subtle sparkle, like moonlight dancing on water. Think sequins with a matte finish or iridescent fabrics that shimmer with a hint of color when they catch the light. A black dress with delicate sequined details scattered across the bodice or a silky top with iridescent threads woven into the fabric are perfect examples.

Let your accessories be the stars of the show! Opt for delicate jewelry with tiny gemstones that twinkle like constellations. A pair of dangling earrings with moonstone or opal or a statement necklace with a single, sparkling pendant instantly elevate your look. Don’t forget hair accessories like a headband with a touch of glitter or sparkly bobby pins for a touch of whimsy.

Even your footwear can join the celestial party! Opt for shoes with subtle metallic details, like a pair of black pumps with silver glitter on the heel or black sandals with straps embellished with tiny crystals. This adds a touch of understated sparkle without overwhelming the overall look.

70s Inspiration with a Modern Twist:

The 70s were all about cinching the waist and elongating the legs. Embrace high-waisted flares in rich jewel tones like emerald green or classic navy. For a dressier look, opt for a high-waisted maxi dress with a flowing skirt.

Ditch the skinny jeans! Wide-leg pants are a staple of the 70s and a perfect way to capture the Midnights era vibe. Look for wide-leg flares in black or brown corduroy for a cool and casual feel.

A 70s jumpsuit in a dark floral print or a sleek black wide leg number is a bold and confident choice for the Midnights era.

Taylor Swift Debut

Taylor Swift’s foray into music – marked by her eponymous debut album (although overlooked in the setlist), is rooted in country aesthetics, a style that’s seeing a resurgence thanks to the likes of Beyonce, Lana Del Rey, and Kacey Musgraves.

This revival is evident in the 43% surge in searches for cowboy boots and a 61% increase for cowboy hats, signalling a strong trend towards country-inspired fashion. It’s a great excuse to get your pair back out again if you bought them for Barbie.

The Taylor Swift debut era was all about youthful charm and embracing your country roots. Think sparkling butterfly motifs, sweet sundresses, and of course, cowboy boots! Here’s how to capture that iconic style and showcase your inner country cutie:

Sweet and Simple Dresses

Floral prints were a staple in Taylor’s early days. Think sundresses with delicate floral patterns in pastel colors like pink, blue, and lavender. These dresses are perfect for a summer day or a casual concert outfit.

Gingham checks, another country classic, add a touch of preppy sweetness to your look. Opt for a gingham dress in blue and white or pink and white, perfect for picnics or afternoons spent exploring.

Don’t underestimate the power of a simple dress in a solid color. A flowy white dress with a ruffled hem or a babydoll dress in a soft pink exudes effortless charm.

Denim Done Right

A denim skirt is a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down. Pair it with a cute t-shirt and sneakers for a casual vibe, or dress it up with a blouse and cowboy boots for a more country-inspired look.

Light wash denim jeans were a signature element of Taylor’s early outfits. Opt for a bootcut or straight-leg style and pair them with a cute top and cowboy boots for a timeless look.

Country-Chic Tops

Plain t-shirts are a blank canvas for adding your personal touch. Look for tees with cute graphics like butterflies, hearts, or even song lyrics from Taylor’s debut album.

A cute button-down shirt in a light blue or pastel pink adds a touch of preppy charm to your outfit. Leave it unbuttoned for a relaxed vibe or tie it at the waist for a more polished look.

Incorporate subtle western details like fringe or embroidery on your tops. A simple white top with fringe detailing on the shoulders or a light blue blouse with embroidered flowers adds a touch of country flair.

Boots Made for Walkin’

No outfit screams “country” quite like a pair of cowboy boots. Brown leather boots are a versatile choice, but don’t be afraid to experiment with colors like black or even white for a more modern take.

For a slightly edgier look, opt for a pair of ankle boots. Chelsea boots or booties with a small heel add a touch of sophistication while still maintaining the country vibe.

Accessorize with Sweetness

Butterflies were a recurring motif in Taylor’s debut era. Embrace this symbol of transformation with a butterfly necklace, earrings, or even a hair clip.

A cute headband or bandana adds a touch of whimsy to your outfit. Choose a floral print headband, a bandana tied around your ponytail, or even a simple bandanna tied around your wrist for a country touch.

Layer delicate bracelets and necklaces for a touch of sweetness. Look for pieces with pearls, hearts, or even charms with song lyrics for a personal touch.

Swifties Fashion

Swifties certainly shouldn’t base their outfit choices on what looks the most visually pleasing, but these findings do go some way to indicating what aspects of each era will be the easiest to procure on the high street, as items that have seen a surge in popularity will be naturally easier to find.

Whatever you wear to The Eras Tour this year, remember that it’s a long set – around three hours and 15 minutes – so you need to consider comfort as well as aesthetics. Bring a jacket in case you get cold, and make sure that your footwear is practical if you’re walking or using public transport to get home.

TikTok Hair Hacks

The world of TikTok is a treasure trove of beauty trends, and hair is no exception! #HairTok has exploded with life-changing (or so they claim) hacks that promise everything from overnight volume to frizz-free perfection. But can you really achieve salon-worthy results with a DIY approach?

#Hairtiktok and #Haircare have 50.9 billion views combined, so it’s no surprise that there are thousands of creators giving tips, tricks, and hacks that supposedly make your hair the best it can be. To help me out, Remy hair extension salon experts at Roxy Hair sent over a list of dos and don’ts so we can experiment and see what really works and how to get the best results.

#HeatlessCurls – 8.9 billion views

It’s no secret that using too much heat is bad for our hair and can cause breakage and dryness. Heatless curls allow you to wake up with perfect waves without the damage – in theory.

There are a few different tools you can use, like socks, a dressing gown cord, or a specially designed heatless curling rod.

Like most things, there is a learning curve when trying heatless curls. Some twist their hair around the tool, whilst others use a braid-like technique, which can be fiddly and difficult to get the hang of. Don’t try these out for the first time if you have important plans the next day, as they might not turn out perfect on the first go.

Those with short hair may also struggle, as it can be difficult to wrap the shorter pieces from the back of your head and keep them secure. Depending on your hair type, the curls may not last as long as they would from using heat. Try using different hair products, like a mousse, hair spray or gel, to keep them in place for longer.

The Essentials:

Suitable Hair: Heatless curls work best on hair that’s slightly damp. After showering, towel-dry your hair until it’s no longer dripping but still has moisture.

Detangling is Key: Always detangle your hair thoroughly before attempting any heatless curl method. This ensures even wave formation and prevents breakage.

Styling Products (Optional): While not always necessary, using a leave-in conditioner, mousse, or curl cream can help define your curls and add hold.

Top Heatless Curl Techniques:

Braid Magic: Braiding damp hair in various ways is a classic heatless curl method. Try French braids, Dutch braids, or even multiple small braids for tighter curls. The tighter the braid, the tighter the curl. Let the braids dry completely, then unravel and enjoy your bouncy waves.

Sock Curls: This fun and easy method uses clean socks! Roll damp hair sections around old socks (preferably tube socks) and secure them with bobby pins or hair ties. Let them dry completely, then remove the socks and tousle your hair for voluminous waves.

Headband Hero: A heatless curls headband can create beautiful, loose waves. Wrap damp hair around your head and secure it with the headband. Let your hair dry completely, then remove the headband and enjoy the natural-looking waves.

T-Shirt Twists: This eco-friendly method utilizes an old t-shirt. Roll up a damp hair section with a t-shirt, starting at the ends and twisting it towards your roots. Secure the ends with a hair tie and repeat with other sections. Once dry, unravel the t-shirt and enjoy the beachy waves.

Pro Tips:

Experiment with Section Sizes: Larger sections create looser waves, while smaller sections create tighter curls. Play around to find the wave pattern you love.

Patience is Key: Heatless curls take longer to set than heat-styled ones. Allow your hair to dry completely for best results.

Scrunch and Fluff: Once your curls are dry, scrunch them gently to loosen them up and add volume.

Setting Spray (Optional): A light mist of curl hold setting spray can help hold your curls in place for longer.

#RosemaryOil – 3.1 billion views

Rosemary oil has blown up in the haircare community, with claims that it can increase hair growth when applied to the scalp. Carnosic acid, a chemical compound found in the plant, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help stimulate nerve endings.

Make sure that any rosemary oil you purchase is mixed with a ‘carrier oil,’ which is an oil that dilutes essential oils and ‘carries’ them into the skin at a safe concentration. This is because rosemary oil by itself is too strong and can cause damage to your scalp. If you make your own, you could use coconut or jojoba as the carrier oil. Shelf life can vary from a week to a few months, so it’s best to store your oil in the fridge and check for changes in smell or colour.

The most popular method is applying the oil onto the scalp and massaging it in, either with your fingers or a scalp massager. How long you choose to leave it in depends on your hair type and how much time you have available.

If you have fine or oily hair, half an hour is recommended, but ensure you wash it out well afterwards. For long, thick hair, you can leave it on for a few hours. Oiling your hair once a week on a hair-wash day is a good rule of thumb.

It is important to note that rosemary oil is not a quick or guaranteed fix. It could take over six months of consistent use to see results. There is also no way to increase the speed of hair growth, only to improve the amount of hair growth. Hair growth is influenced by genetics and age, which means this won’t be a miracle solution for everybody.

#HairDusting – 24.2 million views

Hair dusting is a technique where you cut off your split ends, strand by strand. It can be done by professionals in a salon, or even at home, and the process allows you to keep the length and shape of your hair whilst removing the visible damage.

The first thing you’ll need is a pair of hair-cutting scissors – don’t use your standard kitchen ones, as the blade needs to be sharp and thin to get a precise cut. Section your hair, then loop the hair under your index finger and over your middle finger tightly. Move your fingers down the hair slowly and snip off any split ends that poke out. You can also twist your hair and do the same thing.

This is a very time-consuming process, particularly if you have thick hair, as you’re cutting individual strands. Don’t go into this process expecting to catch every single split end on your head. You also need to be careful that you’re only cutting ends that have already split and not healthy strands, as this can affect your hair density in the long run.

Those with curly hair, textured hair, or those who have layers may need to experiment with different techniques to get their split ends to become visible, but there are several tutorials available online. If you’re not confident you can find the split ends, visit a hairdresser who specialises in your hair type to get the best result.

#DoubleShampooing – 7 million views

The idea of double shampooing or double cleansing is that the first wash breaks down any oils, dirt, or buildup on your scalp, whilst the second helps to wash these impurities away, particularly any stubborn products on the hair.

By removing all impurities, you allow for haircare products to penetrate the hair more deeply. You can also reduce the number of times you need to wash your hair, as your scalp is cleaner the first time around.

However, this method might not suit everyone. If you already have a dry scalp, shampooing more than once can strip the hair of its natural oils, causing dandruff and irritation. This is also true if you like to wash your hair every day, so if you want to start double cleansing, your routine might need to change.

Make sure to only target your scalp when double shampooing, as the lengths of your hair don’t produce any oil and will, therefore, be dryer to begin with. Use a hair mask or conditioner through your ends afterwards for soft, hydrated hair.

Conclusion

I’ve got a lot of long, thick hair and I’m a big believer in keeping it as healthy as possible, so I try to have a good routine and use as little heat styling as possible. That’s why I’m a huge fan of heatless curls – they give me the bouncy waves I love without the heat damage, and I’ve found a lot of success from the power of double shampooing and using the occasional hair mask – clean and shiny hair is always a good hair day!

Remember, your hair is unique, so what works for one TikTokker might not work for you. The most important takeaway is to find a routine that keeps your hair healthy and lets you express your personal style. So, keep experimenting, have fun, and flaunt those gorgeous locks – heat damage or not!

The most important thing to remember is that everybody’s hair is different due to genetics and lifestyle choices. TikTok trends can make it seem like certain hacks will work for everyone when this isn’t necessarily the case.

It is crucial to research any trends that you see before trying them out. Hopefully, this advice will provide some help to those in their haircare journey, allowing them to make choices that are suited to their haircare needs, which will ultimately yield the best results.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

I have always struggled with biting and picking my nails, but, after a lot of work, I’m finally getting my hands looking how I want them, so now it’s time to have fun with it. As the days are getting longer, the birds are singing a little louder, and the promise of warmer weather hangs in the air, what better way to celebrate spring’s arrival than with a fresh and fun nail art design?

As we dive into the new season, searches for ‘Spring nails’ inspiration have increased by 1011% on Pinterest, with beauty enthusiasts looking for the hottest new designs, shades, and prints for their next seasonal manicure. The trend team at Discount Platform Wethrift analysed search volume data on Pinterest to reveal the nail designs that will be huge this season, and Trend Expert Nick Drewe has provided his insight into why we are seeing a growing demand for these manicures.

Top 10 Most Popular Spring Nail Art Inspiration

Embracing femininity has been playing a massive role in trends this year, evident in the latest manicure looks. As daisies bloom around springtime, these nails are the perfect on-trend choice for your next manicure. With a daisy pattern, as the colours are typically white and yellow, this nail choice will complement any outfit, which is why it is such a popular Spring choice.

Sticking with the classic white flower pattern is a more minimal and traditional approach to the trending design, or if you prefer a bolder look, you can make the flowers brighter in colour.

Pastel Coloured Nails – 1633%

Pastel hues are the perfect choice for spring nails – they’re soft, feminine, and endlessly versatile. But how do you wear them in a way that feels stylish and modern?

Skin Tone Harmony: Consider your skin tone when choosing your perfect pastel. Cooler skin tones tend to flatter with blue-based pastels like lavender or mint green. Warmer skin tones look stunning with peachy pinks or soft corals.

Gradient Delight: Don’t be afraid to experiment! Opt for an ombre effect with multiple pastel shades that blend seamlessly for a soft and sophisticated look.

Creamy Classics: For a timeless look, stick to classic creamy pastel polishes. They offer a smooth, opaque finish and pair well with any outfit.

Shimmer and Shine: Want to add a touch of glamour? Try pearlescent or shimmery pastel polishes. These catch the light beautifully and create a delicate, iridescent effect.

Matte Appeal: For a modern twist, consider a matte finish on your pastel nails. This adds a touch of sophistication and makes the colors appear even softer.

The beauty industry predicted the revival of simple nail polish in 2024, and pastel nail colours for spring are no exception. The pastel hues mirror the subtle beauty in nature this time of year. Taking it back to basics with block colour on your nails is perfect for those who prefer a more simplistic and elegant nail design.

Strawberry Nails – 580%

This year, strawberries are taking center stage, offering a delightful and delicious way to decorate your fingertips. So, get ready to ditch the boring solids and embrace the juicy world of strawberry nail art!

Color Palette: Strawberries come in all shades of red, so you have some flexibility! Opt for a classic cherry red for a bold look, or go for a softer pink for a more subtle approach. You can even mix and match shades for a playful, multi-dimensional effect.

Texture Time: Don’t limit yourself to just plain red polish. Experiment with different textures like matte for a modern twist, or glossy for a classic, juicy look. Adding a touch of glitter or metallic accents can also elevate your strawberry design.

The Whole Fruit: Feeling ambitious? Recreate tiny, detailed strawberries on your nails. Use a thin brush and red, green, and black polish to paint the body, seeds, and leaves.

Simple Slices: For a quicker and easier option, paint a few diagonal red lines on your nails to represent sliced strawberries. Add tiny green dots for the seeds and a black line for the stem.

Minimalist Magic: Minimalism is still a major trend. Use a dotting tool to create small red polka dots on a clear or nude base coat for a subtle yet sweet strawberry look.

French with a Twist: Take the classic French manicure up a notch by replacing the white tip with a tiny red strawberry design. This adds a touch of whimsy to a timeless look.

Accent it Up: Don’t feel obligated to have strawberries on every nail. Choose one or two accent nails to feature a detailed strawberry design, while keeping the rest of your nails a solid color or a simple pattern.

This nail design came to the forefront of design inspo for Springtime, thanks to the queen of trends herself, Hailey Bieber. Strawberry nails are a subtle yet fun way to switch up a simple manicure or French tip. With spring often symbolising a time for growth and renewal in nature, strawberry nails are a cute nod to the time of year as we welcome more sunshine.

You can get creative and customise this trend to suit your preferences. Opt for a similar style to Hailey Bieber, with mini strawberries dotted across two of your nails, or choose a single strawberry for your ring finger for a more subtle look.

Minimalistic Manicure – 235%

While bold colors and intricate designs are certainly tempting, there’s a quiet elegance to the minimalist manicure that perfectly captures the season’s fresh and understated vibe. This spring, embrace the “less is more” approach and rock minimalist nails that are both stylish and effortless.

Clean and Classic: The foundation of a minimalist manicure is flawless, well-maintained nails. Invest in a good quality nail care routine to keep your nails healthy, strong, and free of imperfections. Opt for a natural nail length or a slight trim for a clean and sophisticated look.

Nude Nirvana: Nude polishes are a staple for minimalist manicures. Choose a shade that complements your skin tone for a natural, elegant look. If you’re unsure where to start, opt for a sheer nude that allows your natural nail bed to peek through.

Sheer Delight: Sheer polishes are another great option for a minimalist manicure. They add a subtle hint of color without being overwhelming, perfect for those who prefer a more understated look. Explore soft pinks, lavenders, or even a touch of peach for a touch of springtime flair.

Negative Space Magic: Embrace the negative space trend! Leave a portion of your natural nail bed exposed while painting the rest with a thin coat of polish. This creates a clean and modern look that’s perfect for those who like a touch of design without going overboard.

Metallic Minimalism: For a touch of sophistication, consider metallic polishes like silver or gold. A single coat on all your nails creates a sleek and modern look, while using it for accent nails adds a touch of understated glamour.

Embracing natural beauty is a huge trend this year, in particular with nail designs – whether that be a classic French tip or a natural finish. This style of nail is a great way to embody the ‘Clean Girl Aesthetic’ that has over 313k TikTok videos under the hashtag.

If you are looking for a minimalistic manicure, any nude shades are a good option to achieve a simple yet put-together nail look.

French Twist: Give the classic French manicure a spring makeover by replacing the white tip with olive green. This unexpected twist adds a touch of personality and keeps your manicure feeling fresh and modern.

Green is one of the season’s top colours. If you love earthy tones, the staple olive shade is fitting for the renewal of nature in Springtime.

Olive green is a muted tone with just enough depth to make a statement and soft enough to go with anything. The simple, yet glamorous essence of the manicure, makes it a crowd pleaser for those who may have elegant spring events  or a city break booked for the season.

Negative Space Magic: Combine the power of red with the trend of negative space. Paint the tips or sides of your nails red, leaving the rest of the nail bare for a modern and unexpected take on the classic red manicure.

Glitter Glam: For a touch of sparkle, consider adding a subtle glitter accent to your red manicure. This adds a touch of festivity without overwhelming the classic elegance of red.

Red is considered a timeless classic and will never go out of style. This season red is becoming a firm favourite across the beauty industry. Go simple by creating a red French tip,  or get creative with a fun design that incorporates red. If you want something that leans on the classy side, go for a simple red gloss finish.

-Nick Drewe

Colourful French Tip – 138%

This season, ditch the classic white French manicure and step into the world of colourful tips! It’s a playful and trendy way to celebrate the season’s cheerfulness while keeping the elegance of the French tip design.

Color Explosion: Let your creativity run wild! Choose a different bright and cheerful color for each fingertip. Think sunshine yellow, baby blue, grassy green, or playful lavender.

Pastel Paradise: For a softer take on color, embrace the pastel trend. Opt for a range of pastel shades like baby pink, mint green, or lilac for a delightful and whimsical French tip look.

Complementary Colors: Channel color theory by using complementary colors on opposite fingernails. For example, pair a vibrant coral tip with a cool turquoise for a visually striking and balanced look.

Color Matching: Embrace the monochromatic trend and use different shades of the same color for your French tips. This creates a cohesive look with a touch of playful depth.

Classic with a Twist: Maintain the classic French tip shape but replace the white tip with your chosen color. This keeps the elegant structure while adding a vibrant pop.

Ombre Delight: Create a subtle gradient effect on your French tips. Use a makeup sponge to blend two or three colors seamlessly for a soft and dreamy look.

Glitter Glam: Add a touch of sparkle to your French tips with a coat of glitter polish. This adds a festive touch and is perfect for springtime celebrations.

Metallic Accents: Incorporate a metallic line or accent design near the base of your colorful French tip. This adds a touch of sophistication and elevates the overall look.

Floral Fantasy: Feeling artistic? Paint tiny floral designs on the base of your colorful French tips for a touch of springtime whimsy.

If you are someone who routinely gets a classic French Tip, switching out the white for a bright colour is a great way to welcome in the new season. You can go for a uniform approach, with one continuous colour on all tips, or, you can choose a range of colours that vary from nail to nail.

For Spring, you could incorporate pastel colours that are often associated with this time of year into your next nail look.
