Interior Design Trends
1. Farmhouse
The farmhouse style trend has taken over social media in the last couple of years, with many homeowners and décor enthusiasts scouring the web to create a space that perfectly incorporates a farmhouse’s warm, homely aesthetic.
Over the last 12 months, it has become TikTok’s most popular interior décor trend, gathering over 408 million views. Modern farmhouses are particularly popular among TikTok users, with #modernfarmhouse accumulating 231 million views over the last year.
People aged 25-34 make up 35% of the users watching videos related to modern farmhouses, with 35+ and 18-24s totalling 34% and 31%, respectively.
The essence of farmhouse interior design lies in its connection to nature. Wood, stone, and brick are the primary materials, creating a sense of warmth and authenticity. Rough-hewn beams, rustic furniture, and exposed brick walls add texture and character to the space.
The palette of farmhouse design is inspired by the earth’s natural hues. Creamy whites, soft browns, warm beiges, and earthy greens create a tranquil and inviting ambiance. These neutral tones serve as a canvas for pops of color introduced through accents and décor.
2. Vintage
Vintage trends always play a huge role in home décor, and 2023 is no different. With over 288 million views in the last 12 months, vintage placed second in the new study, below farmhouse style.
The most popular hashtags relating to vintage interior design were #vintagedecor and #vintagehome, which accumulated 119 million and 111 million views, respectively. Gen Z seems to be the most interested in vintage décor, with each top-performing hashtag reaching a majority audience of those aged 16-24.
Vintage interior design evokes a sense of nostalgia and elegance, transporting you back to a bygone era. This style seamlessly blends the charm of the past with modern sensibilities, creating a unique and inviting atmosphere.
The foundation of vintage design lies in incorporating well-made, classic pieces that transcend trends and stand the test of time. Think mid-century modern furniture, art deco accents, and antique finds. These pieces exude timeless elegance and add character to the space.
Accessories play a crucial role in adding personality and charm to vintage interiors. Think thrifted finds, antique pieces, and flea market treasures. Vintage frames, mismatched lamps, and quirky collectibles bring a sense of history and unique character to the space.
3. Boho style
This unconventional interior décor style has proven popular with homeowners all over America, allowing people to break boundaries and breathe new life into various spaces with creative flair. As TikTok’s third most popular interior design trend, boho style has gathered over 242 million views on the platform within the last year.
It has proven particularly popular among Gen Z and younger millennials, with people aged 34 and younger responsible for over 190 million views, or 78.7% of the total views.
Boho interior design exudes a carefree and bohemian spirit, embracing a blend of textures, patterns, and colors to create an eclectic and inviting atmosphere. This style celebrates individuality and encourages creative expression, allowing homeowners to personalize their spaces with vibrant colors, bold patterns, and unique finds.
Boho design revolves around the use of natural materials and woven elements. Think wicker baskets, macrame wall hangings, and woven furniture. These elements add texture, warmth, and a sense of earthy connection to the space.
The beauty of boho design lies in its ability to reflect individual preferences. Add personal touches, such as family photos, handcrafted items, and cherished mementos, to create a space that truly reflects your unique personality and creates a sense of belonging.
4. Maximalism
Living by the “more is more” motto of maximalism to design unique, layered homes. Maximalist design is one of TikTok’s most popular décor trends, accumulating over 146 million views in the last 12 months.
People aged 16-24 are some of the most interested in moody maximalism, where homeowners adopt dark and rich color palettes to great effect. Approximately 42% of the 22 million views under #moodymaximalism came from TikTok users within this age range.
Maximalism thrives on layers of richness and visual interest. Think bold patterns, vibrant colors, and a mix of textures, from velvet upholstery to macrame hangings. Layering these elements creates a dynamic and visually captivating atmosphere.
Maximalism embraces a bold and unapologetic color palette, incorporating a spectrum of hues to create a visually stimulating and energetic space. Think jewel tones, vibrant florals, and even unconventional color combinations.
Despite its abundance, maximalism can still create a sense of warmth and comfort. Incorporate plush rugs, textured fabrics, and layers of lighting to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
5. Eclectic
Often, your taste cannot simply be defined by one design, style or shape. Eclectic décor allows individuals to build a home that combines various materials, conditions, and patterns to create unique interiors.
TikTok users love this style, with posts regarding eclectic décor gaining more than 145 million views within the last year. The most views were gathered under #eclecticdecor, totalling 91 million across the previous year. Approximately 50% of these views came from people aged 16-24.
Eclecticism encourages homeowners to showcase their unique taste and interests through a collection of unique finds and personal treasures. Think vintage finds, handcrafted items, and souvenirs from travels. These items add authenticity and personality to the space.
Despite its unconventional approach, eclecticism should still prioritize comfort and functionality. Incorporate plush rugs, ample seating, and ample storage solutions to create a space that is both inviting and practical.
Eclectic interior design is a celebration of individuality and self-expression. Allow your personal taste and passions to guide your design decisions. Let your home tell a story about your unique experiences and interests.
Conclusion
I’m naturally drawn to things that are bright, fun, and colourful. I love patterns and textures, and definitely like to have a personal touch with memories of my family and friends all around me. Eclectic interior design, with a touch of boho and a little bit of maximalism seems right up my street!
