Best Food For Healthy Skin This Winter

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out top tips on the best food for healthy skin this Winter to reduce the harsh effects of the cold air.

Winter Skin Damage

As the winter chill sets in, the cold air can have a damaging effect on your skin, including:

  • Dryness: The cold air can sap moisture from your skin, leaving it feeling tight, itchy, and flaky. This is because the air is less humid in winter, which means there is less water vapor available to hydrate your skin.
  • Redness and irritation: The cold air can also irritate your skin, making it red, inflamed, and more prone to cracking. This is because the cold air can damage the delicate skin barrier, which helps to protect your skin from irritants and allergens.
  • Increased risk of infection: Dry, cracked skin is more susceptible to infection. This is because bacteria and other microorganisms can more easily penetrate the damaged skin barrier.
  • Reduced blood flow: In cold weather, your blood vessels constrict to conserve heat. This can reduce blood flow to your skin, which can make it look pale and lifeless.

Because I am hoping to reduce all these problems and keep my skin as healthy as possible, aesthetic doctors at Sozo Aesthetic Clinic have have sent over an informative guide on what to eat for healthy skin this Winter.

Top Quality and 100% Satisfaction

Best Food For Healthy Skin This Winter

Oily fish helps boost skin hydration

Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish like mackerel, tuna and sardines are known for their anti-inflammatory properties, which can have considerable benefits to our skin. Salmon, especially, is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and nutrients, including astaxanthin, which helps protect the skin from oxidative stress, contributing to anti-ageing benefits.

Salmon has received the seal of approval from countless celebrities, such as Mariah Carey, Kate Middleton and especially Victoria Beckham, who has previously revealed that eating salmon every single day is the secret to her perfect complexion.

If you don’t want to eat oily fish, oily fish supplements are available in a variety of forms, including capsules, liquid, and powder. They can be taken on their own or as part of a multivitamin or mineral supplement.

The recommended daily intake of omega-3 fatty acids is 250-500 milligrams for adults. However, some people may need more or less than this amount. It is important to talk to your doctor before taking any supplements, including oily fish supplements.

Here are some tips for choosing and using oily fish supplements:

  • Look for a supplement that contains EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), the two main omega-3 fatty acids found in oily fish.
  • Choose a supplement that is high quality and from a trusted brand.
  • Take the supplement as directed on the label.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking any supplements, including oily fish supplements.
Pure drinking water

Why you should EAT, not drink your water

Eating water-rich foods is important alongside drinking water because it offers a dual approach to hydration and overall health. While drinking water is essential for staying hydrated, consuming water-rich foods provides additional benefits.

Foods with high water content, such as fruits and vegetables, contribute to hydration while also delivering essential nutrients like vitamins and antioxidants. This combination not only supports overall well-being but also helps maintain healthy skin, aids digestion, and promotes a feeling of fullness.

Incorporating fruits and vegetables with high water content into your diet enhances the rebalancing of water in your system. These foods contain molecules that help deliver the water they contain into cells easily. Examples of foods high in water content include:

  • Cucumber: 96% water
  • Iceberg lettuce: 96% water
  • Celery: 95% water
  • Watermelon: 92% water
  • Broccoli: 92% water
  • Spinach: 92% water
  • Apricot: 86% water
  • Pomegranate: 82% water
  • Avocado: 82% water

The best foods for ageless skin

The natural ageing process depends on a range of nutrients for support. Certain nutrients can contribute to slowing down signs of ageing, particularly in promoting skin health. Generally, the best foods for ageless skin are healthy fats, healthy sources of protein and antioxidant-rich foods.

Several foods are known for their potential anti-ageing properties due to their rich content of antioxidants, such as dark leafy greens, green tea, lemon, turmeric and dark chocolate. In particular, berries are rich in antioxidants, which help combat oxidative stress and inflammation that comes with ageing, such as blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries.

Foods to avoid if you suffer with acne

For those dealing with acne-prone skin, dietary choices can play a significant role in managing breakouts. High-glycaemic foods, such as sugary snacks and refined carbohydrates, can cause spikes in blood sugar levels and therefore trigger increased insulin production, potentially leading to more oil production in the skin. Dairy products, known for containing hormones and growth factors, may also contribute to acne development in some people and processed and greasy foods have also been linked anecdotally to acne.

However, while it’s a widespread belief that chocolate and greasy foods directly cause acne, the truth is a bit more nuanced. Modern science suggests that these foods do not directly cause acne but can exacerbate an existing condition, so if you do struggle with acne, it is best to avoid particular foods where possible.

Some examples of what to avoid include:

  • Dairy products, including all types of cow’s milk (skimmed, semi-skimmed and whole milk)
  • Sugary drinks such as soft drinks, energy drinks and fruit juice
  • Fast food, chocolate and sweets
  • Foods with a high glycaemic index, including white bread and refined grains

Top 5 skin superfoods

Nuts

Nuts can bebeneficial for the skin due to their nutrient content, such as almonds, walnuts and pistachios. Almonds are especially loved by multiple celebrities, including Meghan Markle, who has previously named almonds as her go-to snack for flowing skin.

Nuts, especially Brazil nuts, are high in selenium, a mineral with antioxidant properties that can help clear skin and decrease acne breakouts.

Green juice

Green juice typically refers to a drink made from blending various green vegetables and fruits. It’s often promoted as a nutritious drink due to its high content of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Common ingredients might include leafy greens like kale, cucumber, celery, apples, and other fruits or vegetables.

Actress Reese Witherspoon’s green juice recipe, for example, includes romaine lettuce, spinach, fruits, and coconut water. Green juice has exploded in popularity on TikTok, amassing more than 555 million views for the hashtag #greenjuice.

Ginger

Ginger has great anti-inflammatory effects. Inflammation is often associated with various skin conditions, such as Eczema and Rosacea, and the anti-inflammatory properties of ginger may help soothe and calm the skin.

Including ginger in your diet can be achieved by adding it to recipes, drinking ginger tea, or adding it to smoothies.

Carrots

Packed with vitamin A, carrots contribute significantly to skin health by aiding in cell turnover and preventing dryness, so it’s perfect timing to incorporate carrots into your diet to help your skin battle the colder winter months.

The benefits of carrots have also exploded on TikTok, with the viral ‘raw carrot salad’ trend exploding earlier this year and receiving over 56 million views on the platform for the hashtag #rawcarrotsalad. Videos using the hashtag show how to make it at home, with raw shredded carrots and a few additions like lemon juice, apple cider vinegar and sea salt.

Blueberries

Blueberries, those small, sweet berries, are not just a delicious treat; they’re also a nutritional powerhouse with a wealth of benefits for your skin. Their rich content of vitamins, antioxidants, and other beneficial compounds can help to promote healthy skin, reduce the appearance of aging, and protect against sun damage.

Blueberries are a rich source of vitamin C, with one cup providing about 25% of the recommended daily intake. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant, protecting your skin from free radical damage that can contribute to premature aging and skin cancer.

Interior Design

I love looking for interior design inspiration, and dreaming of when I can afford to decorate my house and make it the beautiful little space it has the potential to be. While I can’t do much right now, I can always find accessories or small changes I can make to get the most out of the space and feel like I’m being stylish.

To help inspire me, the experts at Contractor Growth Network sent over their research into the five most-viewed hashtags relating to popular interior design trends to see which came out on top, and I’ve found some pieces that I felt inspired by to go with each style.

Terms that were solely related to interior design were included in the study for accuracy, excluding blanket terms that could be associated with fashion and makeup.

Interior Design Trends

1. Farmhouse

The farmhouse style trend has taken over social media in the last couple of years, with many homeowners and décor enthusiasts scouring the web to create a space that perfectly incorporates a farmhouse’s warm, homely aesthetic.

Over the last 12 months, it has become TikTok’s most popular interior décor trend, gathering over 408 million views. Modern farmhouses are particularly popular among TikTok users, with #modernfarmhouse accumulating 231 million views over the last year.

People aged 25-34 make up 35% of the users watching videos related to modern farmhouses, with 35+ and 18-24s totalling 34% and 31%, respectively.

The essence of farmhouse interior design lies in its connection to nature. Wood, stone, and brick are the primary materials, creating a sense of warmth and authenticity. Rough-hewn beams, rustic furniture, and exposed brick walls add texture and character to the space.

The palette of farmhouse design is inspired by the earth’s natural hues. Creamy whites, soft browns, warm beiges, and earthy greens create a tranquil and inviting ambiance. These neutral tones serve as a canvas for pops of color introduced through accents and décor.

2. Vintage

Vintage trends always play a huge role in home décor, and 2023 is no different. With over 288 million views in the last 12 months, vintage placed second in the new study, below farmhouse style.

The most popular hashtags relating to vintage interior design were #vintagedecor and #vintagehome, which accumulated 119 million and 111 million views, respectively. Gen Z seems to be the most interested in vintage décor, with each top-performing hashtag reaching a majority audience of those aged 16-24.

Vintage interior design evokes a sense of nostalgia and elegance, transporting you back to a bygone era. This style seamlessly blends the charm of the past with modern sensibilities, creating a unique and inviting atmosphere.

The foundation of vintage design lies in incorporating well-made, classic pieces that transcend trends and stand the test of time. Think mid-century modern furniture, art deco accents, and antique finds. These pieces exude timeless elegance and add character to the space.

Accessories play a crucial role in adding personality and charm to vintage interiors. Think thrifted finds, antique pieces, and flea market treasures. Vintage frames, mismatched lamps, and quirky collectibles bring a sense of history and unique character to the space.

3. Boho style

This unconventional interior décor style has proven popular with homeowners all over America, allowing people to break boundaries and breathe new life into various spaces with creative flair. As TikTok’s third most popular interior design trend, boho style has gathered over 242 million views on the platform within the last year.

It has proven particularly popular among Gen Z and younger millennials, with people aged 34 and younger responsible for over 190 million views, or 78.7% of the total views.

Boho interior design exudes a carefree and bohemian spirit, embracing a blend of textures, patterns, and colors to create an eclectic and inviting atmosphere. This style celebrates individuality and encourages creative expression, allowing homeowners to personalize their spaces with vibrant colors, bold patterns, and unique finds.

Boho design revolves around the use of natural materials and woven elements. Think wicker baskets, macrame wall hangings, and woven furniture. These elements add texture, warmth, and a sense of earthy connection to the space.

The beauty of boho design lies in its ability to reflect individual preferences. Add personal touches, such as family photos, handcrafted items, and cherished mementos, to create a space that truly reflects your unique personality and creates a sense of belonging.

4. Maximalism

Living by the “more is more” motto of maximalism to design unique, layered homes. Maximalist design is one of TikTok’s most popular décor trends, accumulating over 146 million views in the last 12 months.

People aged 16-24 are some of the most interested in moody maximalism, where homeowners adopt dark and rich color palettes to great effect. Approximately 42% of the 22 million views under #moodymaximalism came from TikTok users within this age range.

Maximalism thrives on layers of richness and visual interest. Think bold patterns, vibrant colors, and a mix of textures, from velvet upholstery to macrame hangings. Layering these elements creates a dynamic and visually captivating atmosphere.

Maximalism embraces a bold and unapologetic color palette, incorporating a spectrum of hues to create a visually stimulating and energetic space. Think jewel tones, vibrant florals, and even unconventional color combinations.

Despite its abundance, maximalism can still create a sense of warmth and comfort. Incorporate plush rugs, textured fabrics, and layers of lighting to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

5. Eclectic

Often, your taste cannot simply be defined by one design, style or shape. Eclectic décor allows individuals to build a home that combines various materials, conditions, and patterns to create unique interiors.

TikTok users love this style, with posts regarding eclectic décor gaining more than 145 million views within the last year. The most views were gathered under #eclecticdecor, totalling 91 million across the previous year. Approximately 50% of these views came from people aged 16-24.

Eclecticism encourages homeowners to showcase their unique taste and interests through a collection of unique finds and personal treasures. Think vintage finds, handcrafted items, and souvenirs from travels. These items add authenticity and personality to the space.

Despite its unconventional approach, eclecticism should still prioritize comfort and functionality. Incorporate plush rugs, ample seating, and ample storage solutions to create a space that is both inviting and practical.

Eclectic interior design is a celebration of individuality and self-expression. Allow your personal taste and passions to guide your design decisions. Let your home tell a story about your unique experiences and interests.

Conclusion

I’m naturally drawn to things that are bright, fun, and colourful. I love patterns and textures, and definitely like to have a personal touch with memories of my family and friends all around me. Eclectic interior design, with a touch of boho and a little bit of maximalism seems right up my street!

Vitamins And Supplements To Help You Stay Healthy This Winter

On the JJ Barnes Blog, a nutritionist has shared the best vitamins and supplements to take this Winter to boost your immunity and stay healthy in the cold weather.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

Winter Health

Winter can be a challenging time for our health, as colder temperatures, shorter daylight hours, and the spread of viruses can all take a toll on our immune systems. My kids are constantly bringing home new school germs, and seasonal illnesses can have a significant impact on my day-to-day life, including my moods and routines.

Reduced sunlight exposure in winter can lead to deficits in essential nutrients. Ensuring you have the right vitamins during winter is crucial to support your immune system, helping you ward off common colds and flus and provide optimal support for your health. So we know the best vitamins and supplements to take during the Winter months, Abi Roberts, Sports Nutritionist from Bulk.com, sent over her top tips for the best foods and supplements to consume during the winter months to support immunity and boost our mood.

Vitamins And Supplements To Help You Stay Healthy This Winter

  1. 1. Vitamin D
  2. 2. Vitamin C and Zinc
  3. 3. Echinacea
  4. 4. Citrus Fruits
  5. 5. Turmeric
  6. 6. Fermented Foods

Vitamin D – to combat reduced natural sunlight

Vitamin D plays a crucial role in maintaining strong bones, regulating the immune system, and promoting overall health. It helps the body absorb calcium, essential for bone health, and supports the immune system’s response to infections. Studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency can be linked to increased susceptibility to respiratory illnesses, including colds and flu.

Sunlight is the primary source of vitamin D synthesis in the body. However, during winter months, when daylight hours are shorter and the sun’s rays are weaker, our bodies produce less vitamin D. This decrease in natural vitamin D can lead to a deficiency, particularly in individuals who spend limited time outdoors or have darker skin, which reduces their ability to absorb sunlight.

To combat the reduced production of vitamin D during winter and maintain adequate levels, vitamin D supplementation is often recommended. Supplements can be taken in capsule or tablet form and provide a convenient way to ensure you are getting the necessary amount of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is an absolute staple in the winter months, as our exposure to natural sunlight is limited from October through to March, which can result in low vitamin D levels.

This nutrient is essential as it plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy immune system and bone strength. Supplementing with vitamin D can help mitigate the risk of deficiency and support overall well-being during the darker months.

-Abi Roberts

Vitamin C and zinc – to boost immunity

Vitamin C is a well-known antioxidant, renowned for its ability to neutralize harmful free radicals that can damage cells and contribute to inflammation. By scavenging free radicals, vitamin C helps protect immune cells and enhance their ability to combat infections. Additionally, vitamin C is essential for collagen production, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity of skin and mucous membranes, the body’s first lines of defense against pathogens.

Zinc is another essential nutrient that plays a critical role in immune system regulation. It is involved in the development and activation of immune cells, such as T cells and natural killer cells, which are crucial for fighting off infections. Zinc also helps regulate the production of cytokines, signaling molecules that orchestrate the immune response. Additionally, zinc is essential for maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier, which acts as a physical barrier against pathogens entering the body.

The combination of vitamin C and zinc creates a synergistic effect, further enhancing their immune-boosting properties. When taken together, these nutrients work in tandem to provide comprehensive immune support. Vitamin C’s antioxidant actions protect immune cells from damage, while zinc supports their development and function. This synergistic effect makes vitamin C and zinc a powerful duo for maintaining a healthy immune system during the winter months and beyond.

Both vitamin C and zinc are vital for a robust immune system.

Consuming these supplements during winter can help support your body’s defences against common winter ailments. Vitamin C is also important to maintain healthy skin, bones, and encourages wound healing.

-Abi Roberts

Echinacea – protects against winter illnesses

Echinacea is a flowering plant that has been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments. It is most commonly used to treat colds and the flu, but it has also been used to treat upper respiratory infections, sore throat, and wound healing.

Studies have shown that echinacea can be effective in reducing the duration and severity of colds. One study found that people who took echinacea at the first sign of a cold were sick for an average of 5.5 days, compared to 7.3 days for those who did not take echinacea.

Echinacea is thought to work by boosting the immune system. It contains compounds that stimulate the production of white blood cells, which are the body’s defense against infection. Echinacea may also help to reduce inflammation, which can help to speed up healing.

Echinacea is a popular herbal supplement known for its potential to boost immune system function. During winter, when colds and flu are more common, incorporating echinacea into your supplement regime can provide some added protection, helping to reduce the severity and duration of illness.

As under half of the UK admits to having supplements regularly, it is equally important that we eat the right foods to boost our immunity this winter.

-Abi Roberts

Citrus fruits – a good source of vitamin C

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that helps protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, unstable molecules that can contribute to aging, inflammation, and chronic diseases. By neutralizing free radicals, vitamin C safeguards cellular components and promotes overall cellular health.

Vitamin C plays a vital role in strengthening the immune system’s response to infections. It enhances the production and function of white blood cells, the body’s primary defense against pathogens. Additionally, vitamin C increases the production of interferon, a signaling molecule that helps the body combat viral infections.

Citrus fruits are an excellent dietary source of vitamin C. A single medium orange provides over 70% of the recommended daily intake (RDI) of vitamin C for adults. Other citrus fruits, such as grapefruits, lemons, and limes, also offer significant amounts of vitamin C.

Fruits like lemons, limes, and oranges can provide a significant boost of vitamin C and make for a refreshing and uplifting taste during blue winter months.

-Abi Roberts

Turmeric – has anti-inflammatory properties

Turmeric, a vibrant yellow spice derived from the rhizome of the Curcuma longa plant, has been revered for its medicinal properties for centuries. Its primary bioactive compound, curcumin, possesses potent anti-inflammatory properties, making it a valuable natural remedy for a wide range of health conditions.

Inflammation is a natural defense mechanism that helps the body fight off infections and heal injuries. However, chronic inflammation, characterized by persistent low-grade inflammation, is linked to various health problems, including heart disease, arthritis, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Curcumin, the active component in turmeric, exerts its anti-inflammatory effects by modulating various molecular pathways involved in inflammation. It inhibits the production of inflammatory mediators, such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes, and regulates the activity of inflammatory cells.

Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Adding turmeric to your winter dishes, or taking it in capsule form, can help alleviate inflammation, soothe winter-related aches and pains, and support overall well-being during the winter months.

Fermented foods – promotes a healthy gut

Fermented foods, a culinary tradition dating back centuries, are making a comeback in the modern world, and for good reason. These foods, teeming with beneficial bacteria known as probiotics, offer a wealth of health benefits, particularly for gut health.

Our gut microbiome is a diverse community of trillions of microorganisms that reside in our intestines. These microorganisms play a crucial role in maintaining our health, influencing digestion, immune function, and even mood. A healthy gut microbiome is characterized by a balance of beneficial and harmful bacteria.

Probiotics, the live microorganisms found in fermented foods, can significantly impact our gut health. When consumed, probiotics colonize the gut, increasing the diversity of beneficial bacteria and restoring balance to the gut microbiome.

Incorporating fermented foods like yoghurt, kefir, and sauerkraut into your winter diet can be particularly beneficial. These foods are rich in probiotics, which promote a healthy gut microbiome.

A well-balanced gut can help strengthen the immune system, improving your body’s ability to fend off winter illnesses and maintain overall well-being.

How To Wear Cozy Girl Fashion This Winter

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out top tips from the experts at Boohoo for how to wear cozy girl fashion this Winter, a trend that is absolutely perfect for me!

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

Cozy Girl Fashion

Like ‘tomato girl summer,’ which trended earlier this year thanks to Hailey Bieber, we’re now in ‘cozy girl’ season. The ‘cozy girl’ tag has racked up over 29 million TikTok views, with interest soaring over 20 times in three years.

As somebody who is always cold and spends the Winter months cocooned in layers of fluff, this is absolutely right up my street. But how to look stylish whilst still feeling cozy is something of a mystery as I mainly favour oversized hoodies and fluffy things with animal ears. To help me out, fashion experts from Boohoo have sent over their top tips for the trending fashion pieces to wear this winter, and how to wear cozy girl fashion.

What is the cozy girl aesthetic?

Like the ‘vanilla’ or ‘clean girl,’ the cozy girl aesthetic captures a comfortable lifestyle, prioritizing wellness and feel-good, hygge energy. Experts attribute its growing popularity to “the rise in working from home and wellness and sobriety trends popular with Gen Z.”

The trend is growing year-on-year, with Google searches for ‘vanilla girl’ soaring 270% over the last five years and the TikTok hashtag racking up an eye-watering two billion views.

The vibe is relaxed yet refined. Think chunky knits, cardigans, tracksuits, and wide-legged pants in soft, plush fabrics like wool, cashmere, and neutral tones with warm accents. Key footwear pieces include slip-on shoes, sneakers, and boots.

Trending cozy outfits in winter 2023

Knitwear is bigger than ever this season, with Pinterest trends revealing a 92% increase in searches compared to last year.

The ‘off shoulder sweater‘ style has soared in interest by 355% year-on-year. Neutral colors are trending, with ‘white sweater outfit’ searches skyrocketing 455% in the last three months.

Sweatpants, an early A/W 23 trend, have seen searches rise 52% compared to last year.

Where to find cozy style inspiration?

For cozy girl inspiration, look to classic comfort watches such as Meg Ryan’s rom-com ‘When Harry Met Sally,’ ‘Gilmore Girls,’ and ‘Friends’ which feature layered ‘90s pieces such as below-the-knee skirts, cardigans, fuzzy fleeces, and chunky loafers.

The experts commented, “Nostalgia plays a big part in the ‘cozy girl’ aesthetic, as classic watches like Gilmore Girls evoke the same sense of comfort and ease that the style seeks to achieve.”

How to style cozy fashion?

The experts commented: “Incorporate luxurious textiles and stick to a neutral palette. Oversized knits, relaxed-fit pants, fresh sneakers, slip-ons, or boots are ideal as they balance comfort and style, staying chic and away from slouchy territory.

Be careful to avoid overwhelming your shape with bagginess. Use simple tricks, like tucking the front of your sweater into your pants to define your waistline, and not forgetting to add some jewelry will elevate the style from glum to glam without sacrificing comfort.”

Warm This Winter

I don’t know about you, but I’m blooming freezing. Getting up this morning I found frost over the windows and fog in the air, and I bundled myself up in my dressing gown and slippers, and wondered if I’d be able to afford the heating bill. In the day, when the kids are at school and I’m scurrying around working, it weighs less on my mind, but at night when we’re tucked up in bed, I want to make sure that my children, especially, are cosy.

The cost-of-living crisis and plummeting temperatures mean many of us are worrying about how to keep ourselves and our family warm, without spending too much money. To help me out, sleep experts at Bed Kingdom have sent over their top seven cost-effective tips and tricks for how to keep your bedroom warm this winter to ease my worries and make sure we all get a good night’s sleep.

How To Make Your Sheets Cosy

If you dread having to jump into bed to freezing cold sheets after a long day of work, it may be worth spending one minute heating your sheets with a hairdryer, and this problem will quickly go away.

To Safely heat your sheets and duvet with a hairdryer, remember to keep it at least six inches away from the fabric for safety precautions. Doing this quick, simple exercise will keep your bed warm and toasty, perfect for a cold winter’s evening.

Where To Put Your Hot Water Bottle

While it may be tempting to wrap your hot water bottle in a tight hug for heat, there may be a couple of methods worth trying to maximise its use.

Instead of placing the bottle in your bed before you jump in, simply get into bed and rest the bottle against your belly. Positioning the bottle on your belly will relax your muscles, heat your body and allow you to unwind for a better night’s sleep.

Save Money With Draught Proofing Tips

Cold draughts can wreak havoc in any home, infiltrating your room to reduce the efficiency of your heating system. There are a few easy draught proofing steps you can take to help prevent that sneaky cold air from affecting your interior spaces.

For DIYers and those looking for cost-effective methods, safely use a match or lighter to identify the exact spots where draught is causing a problem. By carefully moving the flame around window frames and doors, you can highlight the precise spots where cold draughts are escaping into your bedroom.

Tackle these cold spots with:

  • Cling film – an average brand-own 50m roll will only set you back £1.50-£2.50.
  • Bubble wrap – make sure to save some bubble wrap from your online shopping orders to help cover those areas where cold air is entering your home.
  • Draught excluders – available in various shapes and designs, they allow you to stop cold draughts from entering at the bottom of doors and windows without compromising your décor.

Draught proofing can help you save around £45 a year on fuel bills, especially if you take a more professional approach. For example:

  • Use DIY sheet plastics to protect your windows.
  • Applying insulation tape or self-adhesive foam strips on those spots where cold air is entering through your windows.

Prevent Heat Escaping Through The Floor

Around 10% of heat loss in a home occurs through floors. The likelihood of losing heat through your floors is higher for those with wooden or laminate surfaces. Rugs can be an incredibly effective addition to any bedroom, serving as an attractive, cosy piece of décor which also serves to insulate your floor and create a more comfortable environment.

Thanks to their great insulation properties and density, wool rugs are perfect for helping foster a warmth in your bedroom, slowing the transfer of heat into your flooring to help maintain a warmer interior.

How To Arrange Your Bedroom Furniture

A simple, yet effective solution to create a warmer, more comfortable bedroom, rearranging furniture and altering the layout of your room has proven to increase warmth. Where possible, ensure no furniture is against your radiators, allowing heat to be distributed across your room instead of being trapped against beds or cabinets.

Ideally, the length of your bed should not be up against a wall, but, if necessary, try to place your bed against an internal wall rather than an external wall, as this will reduce the amount of cold air reaching your body from the surface.

DIY Radiator Hacks

Radiators are one of the most important elements of any home’s heating system, but there are a few things you should know to help them run as efficiently as possible. Up to 40% of heat can be lost from radiators through poorly insulated walls, but a couple of cost-effective hacks can help save some of that much needed warmth.

Placing sheets of foil, or even tin foil, behind your radiators will reflect heat energy back into your room that would otherwise be wasted.

If you have wall space directly above your radiator, putting up shelves can be useful in saving heat and reducing your bills. Instead of allowing the heat to rise to the ceiling, shelves will help throw it forward into your room, creating a cosier space.

Homeowners are also reminded to bleed their radiators ahead of the winter weather setting in. If your radiators are making gurgling noises or remain cold at the top when the heating is on, then bleeding your radiator will solve the issue and make your bedroom warmer.

Buy A High Tog Duvet

Picking the right duvet to keep you warm during the winter ultimately depends on each individual and how low the temperature drops. Generally, duvets of 13.5-tog or higher are recommended during cold winter periods, at an average price of between £15 and £25. If you find yourself to be too hot in bed, a lighter tog may be more suitable, and if you struggle to keep warm during the colder months, you may have to go all the way up to a 15-tog duvet at a usual cost of £20-£30.

Cotton sheets of various types are recommended during winter for a cosy night’s sleep. If you’re looking for the warmest option, look no further than flannel sheets. Due to excellent insulation, thickness and breathable fabrics, these sheets will allow you to enjoy a warm evening in bed while the cold weather rages outside.

Top Tips For How To Cope With Seasonal Affective Disorder

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out top tips for how to cope with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) now the dark and cold nights are drawing in fast.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

Seasonal Affective Disorder

According to the NHS, SAD, or the ‘winter blues’, affects around 2 million people in the UK. It is a seasonal depression that usually occurs during daylight savings times, and while the exact cause is not fully known, it has been linked to reduced exposure to sunlight.

With the dark nights drawing in fast, and I find myself getting up in the dark and going to bed in the dark, I thought now was the time to start learning how to ease the impact of SAD for both myself and for my family. To help me out, the wellbeing experts at beauty and wellness marketplace Fresha send over a list of seven tips that can help you manage SAD symptoms this winter season.

Symptoms Of Seasonal Affective Disorder

If you think you have SAD, especially if you are finding it difficult to cope in the winter months, it’s always a good idea to talk to a GP and see if there’s anything they can do to help. SAD has been linked to the following symptoms:

  • Consistent low mood
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Feeling unsociable
  • Tiredness and fatigue, even with a full nights of rest
  • Oversleeping
  • Hunger, cravings for ‘comfort’ foods – those high in carbohydrates and sugars
  • Weight gain
  • Decreased sex drive

Top Tips For How To Cope With Seasonal Affective Disorder

Incorporate aromatherapy into your morning or bedtime routine

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to help promote well-being. Though this is not a treatment, aromatherapy can be a therapeutic and holistic option to help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and generally make you feel good. The best way to start aromatherapy at home is by using a diffuser that disperses scented vapour into the atmosphere.

Scents can elicit specific emotions and memories, making you feel better, so finding a scent that makes you feel good or reminds you of a fun or fond memory is best.

Try adding an aromatherapy diffuser to your morning or night-time routine. Lemon or peppermint essential oils are great for the morning and can create an uplifting atmosphere. Lavender essential oils are great if you are having trouble sleeping, as this can help increase melatonin production. Other essential oils such as ylang-ylang, orange and clary sage also help decrease anxiety and can be used at any time of day.

Depression treated. Differently.

Keep a diary or journal

Keeping a diary is a great tool that can highlight any patterns and SAD symptoms you are experiencing. Using a notepad or even your notes app on your phone, note down key moments of your day that you think are affecting you. This can help you understand what makes you feel better or worse and creates a sense of mindfulness.

Increase your Vitamin D and light exposure intake

Less sunlight exposure and time spent outdoors in the winter months can result in a lack of vitamin D, a primary cause of SAD, as vitamin deficiency is associated with depressive symptoms. Vitamin D supplements are great to take during the winter months, though if in doubt, consult your GP.

Other natural ways to increase vitamin D are by incorporating mushrooms, egg yolks, and yoghurt into your meals, as these are naturally high in the vitamin. However, light exposure outdoors is the quickest way to increase vitamin D levels. Try keeping curtains open and allow natural light and UV rays to penetrate windows or increase your time outside.

Those with SAD frequently use light therapy through the use of a ‘Light Box’, which works by simulating sunlight. It helps reduce the production of melatonin, which can make you sleepy and is often used in the mornings to help you wake up and get out of bed. These are inexpensive and are a great tool to implement into your morning routine.

Molecular Hydrogen

Include tryptophan and protein-rich foods in your diet

The colder months call for more comfort food, as eating what you crave can reduce stress hormones. Although this can make you feel good, it can have a negative long-term affect if you are not consuming a healthy, balanced diet.

When experiencing SAD, it can be beneficial to consume foods high in the amino acid Tryptophan. Studies have suggested that there is a direct link between this amino acid and the production of serotonin, the hormone related to happiness, memory, sexual desire and sleep. Tryptophan-rich foods include salmon, chicken and turkey. Vegetarian and vegan sources include pumpkin seeds, tofu (and other soya-based foods) and spinach.

Finally, your gut biome is also directly linked to the production of serotonin, and poor gut health is linked to depression and hormone imbalances. It is important to ensure you include enough water, fruits, vegetables, and fibre in your diet to maintain gut health. Challenge yourself to have at least five to seven fruits and vegetables a day.

Ensure you’re doing 75 minutes or 3 x 25-minute exercises a week

Physical exercise is essential for all adults and should be done every week. This does not mean high-intensity workouts; it can be moderate to light activity that can help get your blood pumping. This can even significantly reduce the chance of a stroke or heart disease.

According to the NHS, adults should do at least 150 minutes of moderate to light physical activity a week; this equates to 21 minutes of exercise daily.

That said, a more vigorous exercise routine is better as this can release the neurotransmitter dopamine, more commonly known as the ‘happy hormone’. A minimum of 75 minutes of vigorous/high-intensity exercise should be done per week, and this can be broken down into three 25-minute exercises. This is recommended, as this can naturally alleviate your SAD symptoms, and if you do this outdoors, you can also increase your vitamin D intake.

Introduce more greenery in your living spaces through houseplants

Surprisingly, plants can help create a calm, peaceful environment that alleviates anxiety.

Some species of plants can help purify the air around you; plants such as Chrysanthemums, Monstera plants and Elgergrass plants are great to keep in bedrooms or living rooms and can remove indoor pollutants. This clean, fresh air helps raise oxygen levels in your brain and can impact your serotonin levels.

Furthermore, caring for plants is a common practice for those who want to improve their mental health, and successfully caring for a plant in the winter months can create a feeling of accomplishment and well-being.

Meal prep for the winter months

Being prepared, especially if you know you suffer from SAD, can reduce the impact of symptoms severely. If your symptoms follow a pattern, you will be able to know when they start and can get ahead of them.

One way you could prepare is by cooking and freezing meals in advance for when you have little to no energy; this ensures you have a balanced and healthy meal ready without effort. It also works out more cost-effectively, as batch cooking is cheaper, and you will always have a meal prepared, so you can avoid ordering an unhealthy takeaway.

Meal prepping is one way to prepare for the winter months, but preparing for other things, such as events or social gatherings, in advance is a great way to reduce stress and anxiety. You can also plan for some spare time, where you do not have activities planned, but have a day to yourself where you can recuperate or re-arrange stressful activities or events for a later date.

Conclusion

Hopefully by following the advice we can all get through the darkness of the Winter in the healthiest and happiest way possible, and enjoy the opportunities to snuggle under blankets and light candles.
