Which Characters Have The Most Inspirational Careers?

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out research into which characters from TV and Film have the most inspirational careers that audiences want to emulate.

As a young woman, as well as characters like the ass-kicking Buffy Summers and Sydney Bristow, I aspired to be the writing stars Lois Lane and Carrie Bradshaw. While vampire slaying and international spying seemed somewhat out of reach, sitting at a computer writing, or interviewing people for stories, seemed like something I could really focus energy into emulating.

While I don’t have the high flying career of Lois, or the incredible New Yorker lifestyle of Carrie, I have been able to put my passion for writing to use. So, out of curiosity, I decided to check out which other TV and film characters are inspiring audiences to find the careers of their dreams!

Inspirational Careers

The resarch, which was done by Irish casino Slotbox, looked at the jobs held by the main characters in more than 200 popular movies and TV shows. They also did a search analysis to see if there was a related increase in interest from viewers who were inspired by the characters.

After that, an influence score was assigned to each figure, which revealed the most significant on-screen inspirations by reflecting changes in search interest following the debut of each TV show or movie.

(Sources: Google Trends, IMDb Top 100 TV Shows and Top 100 Films lists. Search volume and TV/film release dates used were from the UK.)

Most Searched For Jobs

Even though Chicago marketing executive Emily Cooper landed her dream job in Paris, she has struggled to settle into her career. Despite this, she has been named the most inspiring figure, and many Emily in Paris fans want to follow in her footsteps.

Google searches for “marketing executive jobs” increased by 9,900% in the first 24 hours following the premiere of the Netflix series in October 2020, giving Emily Cooper the highest influence score out of the more than 200 figures analyzed.

The study found that Instagram user Emily Cooper inspires more people than Chrishell Stause, a real-life influencer and real estate agent who stars in Selling Sunset.

Searches for “marketing jobs in Paris” also saw a significant increase (up 3,500%) throughout the same time period, indicating that fans were not just interested in Emily’s professional life.

In fact, whenever jobs in the media were shown on screen, they were especially popular with viewers. After the Netflix drama The Journalist came out at the beginning of the year, searches for “journalism jobs” also increased by 9,900%.

Even though main character Jordan Belfort’s career was ruined and he was sentenced to prison, searches for “Wall Street” jobs and “stockbroker jobs” skyrocketed in response to the 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street.

Fans also connected with folk musician Colm Doherty from The Banshees of Insherin, who led to an increase in searches for “how to learn music,” and Benoit Blanc from Glass Onion, who sparked interest in private investigators.

Headline Studio + WordPress = Write Better Headlines

Five Most Inspirational Jobs

Even though some people turned out to be much more inspiring than others, there were some professions that kept people interested when they were shown on screen. The five job roles that generated the most searches were as follows when grouped together:

  1. Detective
  2. Journalist
  3. Musician
  4. Secret Agent
  5. Chef

Not all popular television shows and movies featured jobs that piqued viewers’ interest; astronauts, paramedics, office workers, and cleaners did not result in an increase in job searches.

Only Jessica Day from the sitcom New Girl resulted in a slight increase in searches (60 percent increase), making teacher a role that was also underrepresented and somewhat undesirable.

What Inspires Us?

Experts at Slotbox shared thoughts on what it is about these jobs that inspires us most.

Since people seek inspiration in a variety of settings, it stands to reason that for some, the media they consume and the figures they identify with can help them decide which interests, including careers, they would like to pursue.

These days, a lot of movies and TV shows are about lawyers, like Suits, She-Hulk, and The Lincoln Lawyer. Lawyers are often seen as very driven, passionate, and pretty, so we would have expected that to be the most inspiring profession.

However, the fact that people are most intrigued by roles as detectives and investigators is much more relatable. We’ve all done it while watching television, after all!

It’s interesting to note that, when it comes to career inspiration, the research also found that 46% of respondents were female and 54% were male.

Seven Interior Design Trends For 2023

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out advice from experts at Hovia for what interior design trends we should be including in our homes in 2023!

I love the idea of taking some time to get my home looking beautiful. A fresh coat of paint, some new curtains, maybe a throw pillow or twelve. But what are the trends that will make my house look as modern and up to date as possible?

Interior Design Trends

The field of interior design is constantly evolving, and it can be challenging to keep up with new trends.
As a result, interior experts Hovia have compiled a list of trends that are expected to gain popularity in 2023. These trends can help you spice up your home and stay up to date on all the latest trends.

Keep It Bright

A house is not a home unless it has a warm and inviting atmosphere. To achieve this, make the most of the natural light, but not everyone has access to large windows and direct sunlight. As a result, the upcoming season will be all about lamps and chandeliers.

There is no wrong way to choose a pendant, but oversized and noticeable ones are expected to be in this winter. Choosing a large chandelier can be scary and not for everyone, but now might be the right time to try something new or get over the fear that you won't be able to pull it off.

Be Multifunctional

The idea that a house should only be a place to eat, sleep, and relax also fades with the passage of time. With additions like movie and game rooms, gyms, and saunas, a multifunctional home may be the hottest trend in 2023.

Contrary to popular belief, putting together such a room might not cost as much as you might think. All you need is a spare room and either a few pieces of gym equipment, a projector and a sofa, or a gaming console, all of which can be found in a family home.

Get Curvy

Curves and movement in place of straight lines and geometry! Curves are one of the most promising fashion trends for this winter. To achieve this look, you won't need to redo your entire house, even though that might be an option for some people. In point of fact, all that is required to accomplish this is a curved sofa or a doorway that is fun and lively!

Remember The 60's And 70's

In our kitchens, bedrooms, and living rooms, the 1960s and 1970s are back! This includes statement objects and wallpapers, about which Hovia has some knowledge.

For a home in perfect 2023 trend style, try purchasing a statement sofa or adorned cupboard that will be the star of your room and pairing it with soft colors and sleek curves.

Get Textured

Marble comes in handy when it comes to adding character to any room without making it tacky. It has an unexpected texture that is still elegant and smooth, so it won't be too loud. You can also try including pieces made of a variety of materials and textures!

Bring Nature Inside

If your home can be anything you want it to be, why not have a garden? It is a 2023 trend that we have previously seen but that will only become more and more popular. Indoor gardening, plants, and additional earthy items can give the impression that your living room is in a resort.

Pick The Right Colours

If painting furniture and walls is on your list of things to do, you might want to go one of two ways: If you want to embrace the tranquility of earth tones, choose natural colors. If you want a pop of color, stick to calm blues and greens with a touch of soft pink and lavender. Last but not least, you'll want soft gold trims!

Hovia's most recent sales data on their website's most popular colors support this prediction. This demonstrates how consumers began purchasing these particular colors earlier this year, bolstering the notion that natural colors, blues, and greens have been and will continue to be popular.

Experts In Virtual Business Launch A Follow-Up Service For Exhausted Entrepreneurs

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out a follow-up service, launched by Claire Brewerton and her team at the Virtual Business Centre, for busy business owners who find it difficult to respond to inquiries or phone calls.

Our business is small, but growing fast, and increasingly busy. With all the work that needs doing, combined with life responsibilities, it is really challenging to keep up with all the correspondance that needs sorting out each day. I’m always looking for things like Squadhelp that can help small businesses achieve more.

So, when I saw details of a follow-up service designed to take some of the pressure off exhausted entrepreneurs, I had to check it out.

Follow-Up Service

“It’s a real issue for many business owners, particularly solo entrepreneurs, who have to fulfil every role within their own enterprise,” Claire Brewerton explained. “They often cannot keep on top of following up on phone calls, emails, social media messages from people who probably want to work with them – yet they cannot find the time to respond in a timely manner and these organic business opportunities are lost.

“This is not about cold-calling prospective clients. Many good business people have inquiries coming through regularly yet they simply don’t have time to follow up and build those solid relationships. That’s where we can come in and we can book in those telephone conversations or meetings while ensuring that potential clients are being heard and valued. We can even book in meetings six months or a year in advance if a business owner is booked up for months ahead.”

Helping Business

Claire has 20 employees who can assist business owners in organizing their calendars and preventing them from becoming overwhelmed. She has been working with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for more than 20 years from her purpose-built location near Swindon.

Some industries are well-known for never returning calls from customers, which appears to be poor customer service. These include micro businesses like self-employed plumbers, heating engineers, carpenters, and electricians, as well as small construction companies with fewer than three employees.

“The truth is for some small business owners, inquiries come in and are not responded to at all so business is lost from the outset,” said Claire. “In a cost of living crisis when we are all going to have to work harder, this is something to look at and invest in. It keeps your sales pipeline flowing and offers excellent customer service.”

The ‘follow up’ service being offered by Claire and her team costs £35 plus VAT per hour.

How To Ask For A Payrise

On the JJ Barnes Blog, when everyone needs more money, I check out advice from Sue Andrews at KIS Finance about 10 ways to ask for a payrise in a ways that ensures your request is heard.

How To Ask For A Payrise

It may seem like a good time to ask your boss for a raise given the rising cost of living. But it won’t be easy to convince your boss that you deserve a raise now that businesses are under more pressure to cut costs.

At a time when everyone is hoping to see their salary increase to keep up with rising prices, HR specialist Sue Andrews at KIS Finance has been researching the best ways to ensure that your request is heard.

“Going the right way about asking for a pay rise can make all the difference,” explained Sue Andrews. “Just asking your manager and hoping for the best is unlikely to work, when they have so many competing pressures on their budgets. But by following these 10 simple tips, you can really improve your chances of successfully negotiating with your boss and getting the pay rise you deserve.”

1. Don’t Rely On The Cost Of Living Crisis

Since everyone is affected by the current increase in the cost of living, it is unlikely that your argument for a pay raise will be successful.

Since costs are also going up, businesses won’t want to raise wages for their employees because doing so will make their costs even more expensive.

The fact that your current salary isn’t going as far as it used to isn’t enough to convince you that you are worth more if you want to succeed. You need to make your own case for why you are worth more.

2. Don’t Talk About Your Colleagues Salaries

It may be tempting to use this as a basis for your request for a raise, but making it personal is a mistake that can have a negative impact on your boss’s response.

An approach that is significantly more professional and results in an argument that is more convincing is to conduct research and be aware of the current market rate for the kind of position you are applying for.

3. Don’t Make Emotional Arguments

Prepare well ahead of time and base your negotiation on facts. Clearly demonstrate to your manager what you have done in the past year that has benefited the company.

What are your most notable accomplishments? This could be the number of sales you’ve made, deals you’ve closed, new projects you’ve helped launch, or ways you’ve improved systems, depending on your job. They don’t have to all cost a lot of money; sometimes, a few small changes can make a big difference.

Don’t be shy about sharing all of your accomplishments because, especially in a large team, your boss may not always be aware of everything you’ve done.

4. Be Realistic

It’s not a good idea to ask for a price that’s too high because your boss won’t take you seriously if it looks like you just picked a number out of thin air.

Make sure you have the evidence to support your request, like data from a salary survey or job ads with descriptions of similar positions.

5. Have Careful Timing

It’s always a good idea to ask for a raise after delivering excellent work or receiving positive feedback from a client.

Be aware of the company’s financial situation as well. If things are really tight, it might be better to wait and make your request later than to be denied.

6. Make A Formal Meeting Request

This not only gives your manager time to get ready, but it also makes your request seem more serious, which makes it harder for them to ignore.

The letter doesn’t have to be long; all you need to do is explain why you want the meeting and why you think a salary review is good in general. When you meet, you can then present your evidence.

7. Be Confident

When you ask for a raise, it’s normal to be nervous, but you need to be confident to show that you really believe you deserve it.

Focusing on your delivery is essential because fidgeting or not making eye contact undermines authority. You will appear in charge if you sit up straight and speak in a friendly and collected manner. It can be tempting to try to say your piece as quickly as possible, so remember to speak slowly and clearly as well.

It’s also a good idea to make notes of your key points so you don’t forget anything important and cover everything you want to.

8. Think Beyond Money

Although they may not be able to raise your salary, your employer may be able to enhance your benefits package in some other way.

If you think this might be the case, you should be ready to ask for alternatives like more time off, a bigger car allowance, or maybe new opportunities for training and development.

This gives your boss a chance to demonstrate how much they value you in a more cost-effective manner during difficult times.

9. Stay Professional

When you ask for a raise, it’s most important to keep your professional demeanor and not get emotional.

Managers are also human, so they won’t like the feeling of having to agree to something. If things get heated, you might not only miss out on a raise, but you might also find that it hurts your chances of getting hired in the future.

Therefore, you should conduct yourself in such a way that, even if you don’t get the raise you wanted, you will still have improved your manager’s perception of your value to the company.

10. Don’t Threaten To Quit

A highly risky strategy is to threaten to quit if you don’t get a pay raise, regardless of how strongly you believe you deserve one.

Even if you get the raise, your professional reputation will likely be permanently damaged because people will perceive you as difficult and possibly manipulative. If you leave the company in the future, this could even affect your references, so the effect could be long-lasting.

Give your employer every opportunity to address the fact that your current salary is truly a deal breaker. However, if you continue to be dissatisfied with their response, it might be time to look for a new job.

The Top 10 Most Fashionable TV Shows Of All Time

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out a new study by fashion experts at Boohoo, which found the TV shows which had the most influence over the fashion industry.

Like most people, I’ve found myself lured in by the fashion choices of the characters and actors in the TV shows I love. While I could never afford the designer labels worn by Carrie Bradshaw, nor had the body to pull off Rachel Green’s slinkier numbers, I always enjoyed finding ways to try and recreate looks I loved. My daughter is following in the same pattern now, getting very excited by gothic styles, and monochrome outfits, inspired by her love of Wednesday.

Most Fashionable TV Shows

To discover which TV shows have had the greatest impact on our style choices and the fashion industry, the fashion experts did a study, determined to discover the most fashionable TV shows of all time.

The study, which was carried out by fashion experts Boohoo, looked at Google search data for various search terms related to fashion, style, and outfits for each new and recurring television show that had been broadcast in the previous year. The results showed which shows were the most fashionable of the year. The study also looked at every fashion-related TV show to find the ones that had the most influence on the fashion industry over time.

Euphoria

According to the findings, Euphoria is both the most fashionable television show of 2022, and the most fashionable show ever. A staggering 132,900 times per month, people search for terms related to Euphoria’s fashion, placing the high school drama at the top. When broken down, the term “Euphoria outfits” is searched for an average of 121,000 times per month, which is more searches than the other top 10 put together.

Emily In Paris

Emily in Paris is the second-most fashionable show on television in 2022. The term “Emily in Paris outfits” is searched for an average of 31,000 times per month worldwide, and the popular Netflix show receives an average of 39,900 global searches per month for terms associated with the show’s fashion.

Stranger Things

Stranger Things was named the third most fashionable show of the year, according to the study. Stranger Things has influenced a revival of 80s fashion, with an average of 28,800 fashion-related searches per month. This includes bold hairstyles and denim-on-denim.

Peaky Blinders

Peaky Blinders was the fourth most popular show on television in 2022. The term “Peaky Blinders fashion” receives an average of 7,300 worldwide searches per month, making it the most searched-for term for Peaky Blinders fashion 18,200 times per month.

Friends

Friends is the fifth most-searched-for-fashion-related television show of all time, with 16,500 global searches per month. Friends is famous for its fashion choices from the 1990s, including some of the most memorable fashion moments ever shown on screen. Even though the show ended in 2004, the term “Rachel Green outfits” still receives an average of 35,000 monthly searches all over the world.

More Fashionable TV Shows

With 14,400 global searches per month, the study placed Bridgerton just behind Friends as the sixth most popular television show of all time. With 6,200 monthly searches for its fashion, That 70s Show came in second place in the ranking. Gossip Girl comes in at number eight in the top ten, followed by Sex and the City at number nine and Gilmore Girls at number ten.

Boohoo

“Fashion plays a huge role in many TV shows, often showcasing the latest style trends and clothing from top designers, which influences how people dress in real life,” said a spokesperson for Boohoo. “This study provides a fascinating insight into the most stylish shows, with Euphoria unsurprisingly taking the crown. Euphoria is known for its bold, visually striking aesthetic, which includes a vibrant and eccentric mix of fashion. The costumes are often used to express the characters’ personalities and experiences, and constantly push the boundaries of traditional fashion.”

New Game, Teach Your Monster, Gets Children Excited About Fruit And Vegetables

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out a new game for children, Teach Your Monster: Adventurous Eating, that encourages children to get excited about fruit and vegetables.

Being a mum is, in my experience, about 78% about worrying. The rest is thinking about worrying. One of the worries is making sure your children are healthy, and we all know that to be healthy, you have to eat healthy. But children are notorious veg dodgers.

So, I decided to have a look at a new video game from the team at Teach Your Monster, Teach Your Monster: Adventurous Eating, which is designed to get children excited about fruit and vegetables.

Creators of Teach Your Monster To Read, a phonics game that was nominated for a BAFTA, has launched a new game that aims to get kids excited about fruits and vegetables. Teach Your Monster: Adventurous Eating encourages children aged 3 to 6 to try a rainbow of fruits and vegetables, using all 5 of the senses of touch, smell, hearing, sight, and taste, which has been shown to help children develop a better relationship with food over time.

Teach Your Monster, a non-profit organization funded by the charity The Usborne Foundation, found that nearly half of parents stated that they feel like they constantly waste food at mealtimes. Even though parents want their kids to eat a variety of foods, 83% said they ended up cooking the same meals over and over again.

The majority of the parents surveyed reported experiencing mealtime anxiety, with 67% saying they frequently argued with their children and 57% negotiating over how much they would like to eat.

The game’s research also showed that children respond well to upbeat, fun music they can sing along to. Consequently, Teach Your Monster: The celebrated children’s songwriter Simon Panrucker, who is best known for his work on the Cartoon Network shows Clarence and The Fungies, contributed to the writing of several original songs on Adventurous Eating.

Making Fruit And Vegetables Exciting

Teach Your Monster: Adventurous Eating combines fundamental education with top-notch game design aids to directly addressing these obstacles. It is a game for kids that is full of fun and makes eating fruits and vegetables less scary and more exciting. In the game, kids make their own monster and go on a journey with Bub and his friends to learn about different foods using all five of their senses. There are over forty different kinds of fruits and vegetables in the game, including numerous common foods like apples, potatoes, and peas.

“Teach Your Monster: Adventurous Eating is all about getting kids excited about fruit and vegetables and helping them develop a better relationship with food for long-term benefits,” said Antonio Gould, executive director at Teach Your Monster. “The game views fruit and vegetables through the eyes of a child. The more familiar children are with foods, the more likely they are to eat them – and this game develops familiarity around sight, smell, taste, sound, and touch, helping children become a little braver to try new fruit and vegetables.”

About Teach Your Monster

Teach Your Monster is a charitable organization that makes educational educational games for kids. It is funded by The Usborne Foundation. Emily In Paris Sends Searches For Paris Holidays Rocketing

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out research that finds the new series of Emily In Paris has sent searches for Paris Holiday to their highest point in five years.

I haven’t been to Paris since I was a teenager, but I loved the city then and I’d love to go back now. The beautiful architecture, incredible food, and romantic atmosphere call to me.

Jon and I have promised one another that one day, if (when?) we can afford it, we will visit Paris together and have a wonderful city break to explore everything the beautiful city has to offer.

Emily In Paris

According to New Casinos‘ analysis of Google search data, searches for “Paris holidays” have increased by 161% in the United Kingdom in January 2023, shortly after the 21st of December marked the release of the new season of Emily in Paris on Netflix.

Through her appearances in stunning Parisian locations like Place de Valois, Palais Galliera, and Parcs des Buttes-Chaumont, among others, viewers get a glimpse into Emily Cooper‘s glamorous life. As a result, it should come as no surprise that Brits are eager to visit the stunning city to experience the lifestyle of the marketing executive.

“There’s no doubt that Emily Cooper is an influential individual on the show, given her high number of followers who keep up to date with her life by watching her livestreams, plus her persuasiveness with clients in her days at work,” said a spokesperson from New Casinos. “It’s fascinating to see that her character’s influence is carried into the real world. The hit series shows off sides of Paris including nightlife, extravagant restaurants, and famous attractions like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, causing the audience to want to see it for themselves. Considering that the search term has increased by a staggering 161% – it’s certainly a reflection of how much we can be caught up in our favourite TV series.”

10 Reasons Why Women’s Shoes Are Uncomfortable

On the JJ Barnes Blog, I check out the top 10 reasons why women’s shoes are uncomfortable, and what we need to look out for to buy the most comfortable footwear!

Women’s Shoes

As a writer who loves shoes, I’m basically a broke and chubby Carrie Bradshaw. I love buying shoes, and I love opportutinites to wear spangly shoes instead of my dog walking boots, but I’m also very familiar with that burning pain from wearing comfortable shoes!

I’d like to get shoes that are stylish and fun, but know what to avoid to make sure I get the comfiest shoes possible. So, I decided to check out the advice from Matthew Gregory Tropp of Yesmin Shoes about what makes women’s shoes uncomfortable, and what to look out for to get the best fit.

Heels

High heels are common in shoes for women, and can make standing or walking for long periods of time painful and uncomfortable. Women’s shoes often have sharp angles at the toes and heels that are too tight, which can cause pressure points in the feet, ankles, and calves to hurt.

Sandals

Blisters and calluses can result from sandals for women that have thin straps that do not always provide adequate support for the foot. Additionally, the thin soles of many sandals for women may not provide sufficient cushioning or shock absorption when walking on concrete or other hard surfaces.

Pointy Toes

Pointy toes are common in fashion footwear for women, and because there isn’t enough room for the toes, they can be uncomfortable. Blisters and corns on the feet can result from pinching and rubbing caused by pointed shoes.

Narrow Fit

Even though they are available in larger sizes, many shoes for women have a narrow width. Because there may not be enough room in the toe box, this may be uncomfortable for people with wider feet.

Inadequate Arch Support

Women’s fashion shoes frequently lack adequate arch support. Over time, this may put additional strain on the feet, resulting in discomfort and pain.

Unsupportive Soles

Flat soles can aggravate back and leg pain and offer insufficient support for the feet.

Flimsy Material

Women’s shoes are often made of thin, flimsy materials that don’t provide enough cushioning for walking.

Poor Quality

Shoes for women’s fashion are frequently made cheaply from low-quality materials, making them uncomfortable and difficult to wear. The shoes that Yesmin Shoes, based in Los Angeles, California, keep in stock are of the highest possible quality. It’s possible that other businesses just keep items on the shelf that look great!

Inadequate Soles

Insoles for a lot of women’s shoes are thin and flat, providing little cushioning or arch support. When you stand or walk for a long time, this can cause pain and discomfort.

Tight Fit

Shoes for women typically have a tight fit, which can cause pain and discomfort over time. Blisters, rubbing, and pinching can occur on the feet when a shoe doesn’t fit right.

Find Comfortable Shoes

Women can take steps to ensure that their fashion shoes are supportive and comfortable for their feet by understanding the specific issues with them. It is possible to ensure that women’s shoes are comfortable without sacrificing style by purchasing high-quality footwear and wearing cushioning insoles.

Women can enjoy the fashion trends in women’s footwear without sacrificing their comfort by investing in high-quality women’s shoes and taking the time to find the right fit.
